Getting to know Jennifer Van Allen

I believe in personalized care based on your unique life journey. I have been called to this field with the goal of giving the best care possible. I believe in serving with a compassionate heart and empathetic listening. My focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a neutral, safe space, listening to your concerns, and including you in shaping how treatment will look for your journey. My first experience in this field was with a crisis and suicide hotline. I quickly discovered that this work would be a part of my life forever. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling from Webster University and a Bachelor's degree from East Carolina University. I specialize in Marriage and Family Counseling, a part of counseling I am very passionate about. Additionally, I am certified in Florida to provide Adoption-Related Counseling. I have also completed a certificate program in trauma-related counseling and have experience working with those who have experienced trauma, including emotions and situations related to adoption. My background has given me a strong foundation to work closely with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and addictions. I am familiar with 12-step programs for addictions and can incorporate these to support the counseling process. If you request, I also provide Christian-based counseling. I accepted Jesus in my middle school years and believe prayer is a gift from God to offer encouragement and support during difficult times. I am here not to judge but to provide support, direction, and new tools to help you along your path. Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have. - Margaret Mead

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy is a partnership in support and helping others to healing and self improvement. With that said I believe that it is important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with. That therapist may be me or it could mean that you continue with your search. Both of those are acceptable. My sessions are 45 to 60 minutes long. I am punctual and do not run late. It is very unusual to start on appointments past 10 minutes of the appointed hour. The first one to three sessions is a lot of getting to know each other. I will ask questions. The goal of the questions is to get to know you and for me to access some of where we should start with treatment. At that time you also may ask me questions to try to understand my approach better. I understand that people are in different parts of their journey in life and I try to understand where each person is in that journey. After I am able to understand a little more about your journey then, we can discuss how we together can work on your goals for you life. Some of my style of therapy include, being a good listener and empathic. I also can be direct but caring with questions. I do work with Christians as I am a believer in Jesus Christ, but have had a background working with Jewish patient's. I also work with others who are unsure if they believe in a god or don't want to say anything about a god. I do believe in the power of prayer, but I also ask consent if I pray with anyone. I respect all patients in their spiritual journey and have kept that out of counseling sessions if that is important to them. I hope that you find the therapist that is a good match for you and that your tomorrow will have some joy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I use several different approaches and do not commit to just one type of therapy approach. I use family systems theory, motivational interviewing, person centered, CBT, !2 step programs for addictions and existentialism. A lot of time different approaches work best for different people. So I try to use an approach that works best with the patient at the time of the session.

I have always had a slightly eye-roll perspective on "therapy". Working with Jennifer has showed me the powerful impact of therapy can have. In just a month or so of working together - I have grown so much both personally and professionally. Her ability to listen - engage - and offer tools to implement has been great!
