Getting to know Jesse Kern
Hi, I'm Jesse. Life is filled with challenges that catch us off guard. It's easy to feel frustrated and confused -- even overwhelmed at times. My training and experience as a counselor have prepared me to offer you an authentic experience that is healing, evidence-based, and focused on getting you practical results.
My basic philosophy is that none of us is born with all the knowledge we need. But throughout life, we meet people, learn from our experiences, and look deep within ourselves to develop the skills we need to move forward. As your counselor, I see myself as a co-explorer with you. It's my privilege and responsibility to listen to your concerns, hear your insights, and offer some of my own technical knowledge or third-person perspective -- and of course, to give you encouragement!
I have been practicing counseling at the master's degree level for more than ten years. I am currently active as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Arizona. I earned my master's degree in Social Work from Arizona State University (ASU), where I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. During my graduate program, I was able to establish a strong therapeutic foundation through my advanced standing internship providing individual and group trauma therapy to adult survivors of childhood sexual trauma.
My bachelor's degree in Anthropology is also from ASU. My decision to study global cultures, world religions, and population movements springs from my genuine desire to learn from people whose beliefs, experiences, and communities are different than my own. Anthropology has informed my stance of 'nonjudgmental curiosity' each time I meet with someone and learn about their unique history.
As a therapist, I have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), modified Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (modified DBT), and Mindfulness-based therapy. I practice all of these techniques from a client-centered perspective. I tailor these therapies to meet your personal needs and counseling goals.
I have specialized in providing counseling to both the POZ community (people living with HIV/AIDS) and LGBTQ+ people since 2013. During my career as a public behavioral health social worker, I have worked on Assertive Community Treatment and in-home counseling services for people living with severe and persistent mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder with psychotic features, and severe depression. I use an eclectic approach to help my clients achieve their goals, grow from painful experiences, and effectively cope with depression, anxiety, grief, phase of life challenges, relationship difficulties, stigma, and other issues.
At this time, I provide individual counseling and work exclusively with adults (ages 18+) over Telehealth. On occasion, we may agree it would be helpful to invite another person to join us in a counseling session -- such as a spouse, partner, family member, or friend. However, beyond these occasional situations, at this time I am not providing formal couples counseling, family counseling, or group therapy.
I work with all clients, no matter their medical status, gender, or sexuality. My passion is and always has been people -- plain and simple. Whatever your background, situation, or identity, I look forward to meeting you as an individual. I'm excited to explore how we can work together as a collaborative team. Let's help you reach your goals in this next chapter!
