I'm Dr. Jessica Dorland, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience serving individuals, couples, families, teens, and children through my private practice, In One Peace. I provide telehealth services to clients in Arizona, Minnesota, and Ohio, and I bring a trauma-informed, whole-health perspective to every session. My approach is simple: I work outside the box. I don't come into our first session with a predetermined plan or a one-size-fits-all model. Instead, I take the time to truly understand your situation — what's working, what isn't, and what you actually want your life to look like. From there, we build something together. Trauma-informed care is at the core of how I practice. That means I understand that many of the struggles people bring to therapy — relationship patterns, anxiety, emotional reactivity, difficulty communicating — are often rooted in past experiences rather than personal failure. My job isn't to fix you. It's to help you understand yourself more clearly, so healing becomes possible. I work with a wide range of concerns, including relationship and communication difficulties, family dynamics, adolescent and teen mental health, chronic pain and illness, and adjustment to life transitions. My background spans physiology, education, mental health counseling, and behavioral health — which gives me a uniquely integrated lens when working with clients. Most clients find that they feel meaningfully better within five to eight sessions, though I tailor the frequency and duration of our work entirely to your needs. Sometimes one session is all you need. Sometimes we work together longer. Either way, I'll meet you where you are. I accept insurance and offer a sliding fee scale of up to 65% for those with financial need.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me looks a little different than what you might expect from therapy. I don't show up to our first session with a clipboard full of assumptions. I show up curious about you — your story, your strengths, and what you're hoping to get out of our time together. My style is direct, warm, and practical. I'm not going to nod quietly for 50 minutes and send you home with a worksheet. I'm an active participant in our sessions. I'll ask questions, offer observations, and sometimes gently challenge you — because real growth tends to happen at the edges of our comfort zones, not safely inside them. I practice from a trauma-informed foundation, which means I approach everything you bring to me with the understanding that behavior makes sense in context. Before we ask "what's wrong with you," we ask "what happened to you?" That shift in perspective changes everything about how we work together. Sessions are collaborative. You set the agenda. I help you dig deeper than you might on your own and find the threads that connect your past experiences to your present patterns. We may use elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, somatic awareness, or narrative approaches — whatever fits you best. There's no rigid protocol here. I want you to feel comfortable from the start. That means you can be honest with me, even if what you're honest about is that something I said didn't land right. This is your space. I just help you navigate it. A few practical things to know: I see clients exclusively via telehealth on a HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform. Sessions are typically 50 minutes. Most clients notice meaningful progress within five to eight sessions, though we'll always work at a pace that feels right for you. I welcome questions before you even book — reaching out doesn't commit you to anything.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every client's process looks a little different, but here's what you can generally expect when we work together. Before our first session, I'll ask you to complete a brief intake form so I have some context going in — not to put you in a box, but so we don't spend our first hour on paperwork when we could be actually talking. I review everything you share carefully before we meet. Our first session is an intake and assessment. We'll talk about what brought you in, what your life looks like right now, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. I'll ask about your history — personal, relational, medical — because context matters. By the end of that session, you'll have a clearer sense of whether I'm the right fit for you, and I'll have a clearer sense of how I can help. From there, we build a treatment plan together. This isn't a document that sits in a drawer — it's a living framework that guides our work and evolves as you do. We'll identify goals that are specific and meaningful to you, not just clinical checkboxes. In ongoing sessions, we might explore patterns you've noticed, work through something that happened that week, process a memory that keeps resurfacing, or practice a skill you're trying to build. Some sessions feel like breakthroughs. Some feel quieter and more reflective. Both are part of the process. I periodically check in on how things are going — not just in session, but in your actual life. Are things shifting? Are you feeling better? If something isn't working, I'd rather know so we can adjust than have you quietly endure an approach that doesn't fit. All sessions are conducted via HIPAA-compliant telehealth, so you can engage in therapy from the privacy and comfort of your own space — which, for many clients, makes it easier to open up.
