I’m Jessica Shah, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate who works with young adults and adults navigating anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, self-esteem, and life transitions. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck in patterns you want to change, struggling with relationships, or trying to figure out what comes next. You don’t have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Young adulthood can bring a lot of change at once—college, careers, relationships, family expectations, increasing independence, and figuring out who you are and what you want. I enjoy helping clients navigate these transitions while building confidence, healthier coping skills, and a better understanding of themselves. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), solution-focused therapy, and strengths-based approaches. Together, we can look at patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behaviors, while developing tools you can actually use outside of the therapy room. Therapy with me isn’t about being told what to do; it’s about having a supportive space to understand what’s happening, identify what you want to change, and work toward goals that feel meaningful to you. I earned my Bachelor’s in Psychology and Master’s in Social Work from Stony Brook University. My experience includes crisis intervention and short-term therapy with adolescents and adults in inpatient psychiatric care, as well as community-based mental health work. Starting therapy can feel uncomfortable or intimidating, especially if you’ve never been before. My goal is to make that first step easier by creating a relaxed, nonjudgmental space where you can be yourself, talk honestly, and feel genuinely heard.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you’re bringing in a child or teen, we’ll work on building coping skills, strengthening emotional regulation, and navigating school difficulties, and I’ll partner with your family throughout so support carries over at home. For adults, I focus on building insight, shifting unhelpful patterns, and working through life and career transitions alongside you. Whatever brings you in, I want our work together to feel collaborative and nonjudgmental — you set the pace, and my goal is simply to help you feel safe, comfortable, and heard as we go.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first session, our Client Care Coordinator, Heather, will reach out to help complete paperwork and make sure I’m a good fit for what you’re looking for. That way, when we meet, we can focus on you rather than spending most of your first session on forms. For young adults and adults, the first few sessions are about getting to know you and understanding what’s bringing you to therapy. We’ll talk about what’s been going on, what’s working well, where you may be feeling stuck, and what you’d like to be different. You don’t need to arrive with clearly defined goals—we can figure those out together. As therapy continues, I’ll tailor our work to your needs. Some sessions may focus on processing emotions or understanding patterns, while others may be more practical and focused on coping skills, problem-solving, communication, or changes you can try between sessions. You’re the expert on your life, and I bring the clinical perspective and tools. We’ll regularly check in on what’s helping and adjust our approach as your needs and goals change. For teens, a parent typically joins for part of the first session before I begin meeting individually with the teen. For younger children, the first appointment is with parents, followed by individual sessions with the child using developmentally appropriate approaches such as play, art, and sand tray therapy. I also check in with parents periodically to discuss progress and ways to support their child at home. At any age, my goal is for therapy to feel comfortable, collaborative, and personalized to you.
