Getting to know Jessica Shuren

I have been working with individuals suffering from addiction and mental health issues for over 20 years. I love the work I do and assisting others to develop healthy coping strategies and build a life they are proud of. I use a trauma-informed approach and person-centered techniques that allow clients to feel empowered while accessing my expertise in the therapeutic relationship. I specialize in addiction, self-esteem, empowerment, codependency, blended families/co-parenting, and ethical non-monogamy. I hold a Master's in Social Work from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. It is important to note that I am not a medication prescriber. Additionally, I may appear to be in network with some insurances such as United Healthcare, but please be aware that I do not accept clients with NYSHIP insurance for in-network services. It is the client's responsibility to understand their insurance plan and what they have access to.

What should a new client know about working with you?

**It is important to note that I am not a medication prescriber. Additionally, I may appear to be in network with some insurances such at United Healthcare, but please be aware that I do not accept clients with NYSHIP insurance for in-network services. It is the client's responsibility to understand their insurance plan and what they have access to. My therapy style is flexible contingent upon the individual with whom I am working. I typically blend elements of evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Seeking Safety with a solution-based approach to reach small milestones as quickly as possible and help to alleviate negative symptoms.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

**It is important to note that I am not a medication prescriber. Additionally, I may appear to be in network with some insurances such at United Healthcare, but please be aware that I do not accept clients with NYSHIP insurance for in-network services. It is the client's responsibility to understand their insurance plan and what they have access to. When I begin to work with a new client, I like to complete a complimentary 15 minute session to ensure that we are a good fit for one another. Once established that the client's concerns are in my area of expertise, I typically schedule a 90 minute session to complete a full assessment and gather diagnostic information. We will then collaborate to determine if the client requires weekly or bi-weekly sessions and how long those sessions will be. A treatment plan will be developed and shared with the client so that there is an identified and mutually-agreed upon goal list and the client is able to measure progress toward that goal.
