Jesus Rivera, LPC

Psychotherapist
4200 Euclid Ave, Ste 104, Rolling Meadows, IL
Jesus Rivera is a licensed professional counselor at Mosaic Wholeness Center in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, offering culturally grounded, faith-sensitive therapy for individuals navigating anxiety, addiction, and problematic gambling, especially for people who have tried therapy before and walked away feeling like the counselor never quite got them. Jesus has a particular passion for working with individuals struggling with problematic gambling and substance use. He understands that these concerns rarely exist in isolation. They are often tangled up with stress, identity, shame, and the particular exhaustion that comes from fighting something that feels bigger than you. He brings specialized expertise in this area, along with genuine warmth and zero judgment. He also has a deep commitment to serving Latino and multicultural clients. As a 2.5-generation Puerto Rican, he knows firsthand what it means to move between worlds and to wonder whether a therapist will truly understand your background, your faith, or your story. In his office, those things are not footnotes. They are part of the work. His approach draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy and is grounded in a strengths-based, person-centered foundation. Before becoming a therapist, Jesus spent 18 years as a para-educator, and that experience shaped a clinician who leads with patience, steadiness, and the deep conviction that every person is worth showing up for. Sessions are available in person and virtually across Illinois.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you have been to therapy before and left feeling like the counselor did not really get you. I want you to know that experience is more common than it should be, and it is not a reason to stop trying. A lot of what I do is create a space where people who have felt like outsiders in a therapy room finally feel they belong there. My style is warm, direct, and unhurried. I am not going to rush you through a protocol or treat your struggles like a checklist to work through. I bring genuine curiosity to every person I sit with, and I take seriously the cultural, spiritual, and personal context that shapes who you are and what you are carrying. If you are dealing with problematic gambling or substance use, I want you to know that this is an area I care deeply about and have invested in professionally. I understand how much shame can surround these struggles, and how complicated the road to change can feel. You will not be judged here. You will be met with honesty and with real support. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which means our work together will involve both building practical skills and developing a deeper understanding of what drives your patterns. For clients who want faith woven into the process, I am comfortable doing that. For those who do not, that is completely fine. Before I became a therapist, I spent 18 years working alongside students who needed someone to stay and not give up on them. I carry that same commitment into every session.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is about getting to know you, not diagnosing you or mapping out a treatment plan before I even understand who you are. I want to hear what brought you in, what life has looked like leading up to this point, and what you are hoping might be different. I also use that time to answer any questions you have about the process, because starting therapy should not feel like stepping into the unknown. From there, early sessions focus on building a clear picture of what is actually going on beneath the surface. For clients dealing with gambling or substance use concerns, that means exploring not just the behavior itself but what is underneath it: the stress, the triggers, the emotional patterns, and the moments where things tend to unravel. Understanding that landscape is what makes the work that follows actually useful. Once we have that foundation, sessions become more active. I bring in tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to help you build practical skills for managing urges, regulating emotions, and responding differently to the situations that tend to pull you off course. The goal is not just insight. It is a real, lasting change in how you function day to day. Throughout the process, I check in regularly about how the work is landing. If something is not clicking, I want to know. I would rather adjust than keep going down a path that is not serving you. Most clients start by meeting weekly, especially early on. Consistency matters, and I will be honest with you about that, because the work builds on itself over time.
