Jhoselis Shyam, LSW

Psychotherapist
PA
Most people who reach out to me aren't looking to be fixed. They're tired, carrying something they haven't been able to put down, and wondering if talking will actually help. I'm a bilingual therapist practicing in English and Spanish. My work is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which means I'm less interested in helping you fight your anxiety or grief and more interested in helping you build a life big enough to hold them while still moving toward what matters to you. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, and life transitions that look manageable from the outside and feel like a lot from the inside. I have a particular affinity for veterans and military families, and for people living between multiple cultures or two languages. Before becoming a therapist, I spent over a decade in federal national security service. I'm also a mother. Both of those inform how I sit with people: I'm not easily rattled, I don't need you to arrive polished, and I take seriously that you're the expert on your own life. I hold an MSW from George Mason University, trained at the DC VA Medical Center, and practice under the clinical supervision of Angie Levesque, LCSW. If this sounds like the kind of therapist you've been looking for, I'd welcome hearing from you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first session is mostly me getting to know you, what brought you here, what's been hard, what you want to be different. You don't need to have it organized before you arrive. My style is collaborative and pretty direct. I'll ask questions, offer observations, and check in about whether what we're doing is useful. I won't sit in silence waiting for you to fill it, and I won't hand you a worksheet and call it a plan. Because I work from an ACT framework, we'll spend time early on getting clear about your values, what kind of life you actually want, and use that as the compass for the work. Some sessions involve practicing skills; others are just talking something through. You're the expert on your own life. My job is to bring the clinical piece and to be honest with you, including when I think something isn't working.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We usually start with a brief free consultation call so you can get a feel for me before committing to anything. The first session or two is intake, your history, what's been going on, and what you want out of this. From there we set a direction together, what we're working toward and how we'll know it's working. A typical session opens with a check-in on how the week went and anything that came up since we last talked. From there we go where it's most useful. Sometimes that's unpacking a specific situation, practicing a skill, or its stepping back to look at a pattern. I'll often suggest something small to try between sessions, but it's an experiment, not homework you can fail. Most clients start bi-weekly. We'll revisit progress periodically, and if something isn't working, I want to hear it so that I can give you the best service possible.
