Getting to know Jill Scott-Trainer

Hello! Thank you for stopping by to learn a little bit about my practice. I provide individual, family, and couples psychotherapy. Although I have worked with many clients facing various issues, my specialties include loss and bereavement, life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, depression, anxiety, and fertility challenges. I have a particular interest in working with suicide survivors—individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide—families coping with grief and loss, cancer patients, young adults managing illness, and couples navigating fertility issues. Since much of my focus is on grief and loss, I have extensive experience supporting clients in great distress. I strive to concentrate on the present, focus on the future, and explore the past to better understand current behaviors and coping strategies. I create a safe space where clients can work toward their goals and develop additional coping tools to adjust to life’s changes. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, evidence-based care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When life is overwhelming, I focus upon giving you the tools that can bring immediate relief. Whether we're meeting in person or online, I try to make the environment comforting and relaxing. I'm easy to talk with and the clients I work with are dealing with various issues. I've been in private practice for over 25 years and working in social work for more than 35 years. My availability varies but am usually able to see clients within a week of contact. I look forward to working with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy is primarily systemic. Systems theory seeks to address people not at an individual level, as is often the focus of other forms of therapy, but as people in relationship, dealing with the interactions of groups, their patterns and dynamics. Generally some disruption within your personal system, such as an illness, loss or death, brings you to therapy. Examining the relationships that are in your everyday life—friends, family, co-workers and communities—help determine what you would like to work on to give you better coping strategies. I also use psychodynamic methods to help determine how you learned to deal with everyday life. Most of our adult behaviors are rooted in how we grew up and values we were taught as children. By discussing the past, we can understand the present and how to make changes in our thinking and behaviors for the future. Most symptoms are adaptive. There are usually very good reasons why people are operating in ways that may not make sense to themselves or others. I work with my clients to deepen their understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Over the course of treatment, this collaborative process can lead to positive change and self-growth.
