Joan Martin, LICSW

Psychotherapist
WA
Hi there, I'm Joan! It has been said that healing begins when we reach out for help. I commend you for that. I specialize in working with adults 18 and older; navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, loss, grief, age-related issues, anger, and trauma. I have earned an MSW Degree from Fordham University and practice as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). In addition, I hold a PhD in East/West Psychology. My approach I have a client-centered, collaborative approach to therapy. I am here to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can be yourself. I believe in meeting you where you are. You can start with today, or you can go back to when you were 3 years old. My focus My client's focus is to engage you in learning coping skills to address negative self-talk and behaviors that prevent you from achieving your goals, and how you would like your life to be. The objective is for you to increase self-awareness and decrease emotional pain. This can happen over time, as we continue to work together. My communication style I value open communication, positive reinformcement, observing and shareing my impressions with you in a non judgemental mannner. I will encourage you to give me feedback on our conversation, disagree or ask for clarity. I believe therapy is a collaborative process. I will make every effort to be a team player and will encourage you to do the same so that you can create the life you deserve. My journey to mental healthcare During my graduate training, I had the opportunity to work with children 5 to 7 years old who lived in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Harlem, NY. They were coping with neglect, abuse, and disregard. During the program, these children grew and blossomed. With acceptance, empathy, and positive reinforcement, they became more confident, and their newfound self-esteem created courage and hopefulness. I came to realize that with positive reinforcement, support, and acknowledgment.
