Getting to know Joana Law
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a Master’s in Social Work, concentrating in mental health. I started my career in New York City specializing briefly in psychiatric services for the Asian community before joining the Department of Psychiatry at NYC Elmhurst Hospital, where I expanded my work to the general population.
Since 2008, I have been in private practice, serving adults with anxiety, depression, narcissistic abuse, and grief. My previous work at Elmhurst Hospital covered many stages of care, including acute inpatient care, outpatient behavioral health services, the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), and the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). For years, I provided citywide psycho-education and numerous cultural sensitivity trainings for various institutions. In the 1990s, I co-founded the policy advocacy organization NYCAAMH (New York Coalition for Asian American Mental Health) and helped establish Elmhurst Hospital’s Asian Mental Health Program, the first of its kind on the East Coast.
Believing that no single therapy fits all, I integrate different treatment models to achieve the best outcomes for my patients.
