Getting to know Joanna Fahey

Why therapy and why now? Life is too short to accept half measures. If you find yourself ping-ponging between the past (depression) and the future (anxiety), you cannot be fully present in the here and now, where life is happening for you—not to you! Utilizing mindfulness, you will learn how to be safe in the present moment, so that you can begin building a foundation of self-care. From this grounded place, you choose whether we go on an "archeological dig" using psychodynamic psychotherapy, attachment theory, trauma-informed care, or whether we focus on skill building using CBT, DBT, or other evidence-based practices. I bring twenty-six years of experience both as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and as a Clinic Director of various community mental health clinics in NYC. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work. I am certified in Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and also practice evidence-based approaches such as DBT, CBT, and attachment theory. You deserve to live your best life now, freed from shouldering the unwanted baggage that you carry around—not realizing that you have a choice to discard anything that does not serve you today. I am also a yoga instructor and utilize the mind-body connection as a foundation for our work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I often use mindfulness based therapy in my practice to provide a foundation for self care and to practice being present. In your first session, we'll explore what brought you to therapy and then decide the most appropriate ways to help you make progress. We can use CBT to explore how your thoughts affect your emotions and experience or for a deeper dive. we can use psychodynamic psychotherapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work with clients who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship issues. During our initial sessions, we will explore the issues that brought you here, and collaborate to create a plan for addressing them in a way that helps you get your life back. Most of my clients see a gradual lifting of symptoms within the first month and sustained improvement thereafter. I have a compassionate approach and will always start with where you are at and appropriately push you to expand and learn to meet change with less fear.

From the immediate time in which I walked In the office of Dr. Fahey, I felt supported. I remember coming to the office shortly after loosing my eldest sister to breast cancer & eldest brother to cancer and being greeted with understanding of the losses. From that point it was important to have a doctor that understood all the layers of situations and how to help me navigate the scenarios without laying in grief. There were many practices that were there to help retrain my brain and confidence
