Getting to know Dr. Joel Givens

I welcome individual adolescent, adult, and older adult clients, as well as couples from diverse backgrounds. I am passionate about addressing the effects of discrimination and injustice in the counseling process. I work with clients presenting with depression, anxiety, trauma-related problems, and addiction/substance use issues. I prefer to work with clients who are motivated to make changes. I specialize in working with older adults and clients with trauma or addiction-related concerns. I have received advanced training in Gottman-focused couples therapy and have experience in crisis/disaster mental health, clinical supervision, and working with adolescents. I hold a PhD in Counseling Education and Supervision from the University of Northern Colorado. I provide a warm, compassionate, and encouraging presence. It is important to me that you feel seen and understood. Together, we will collaborate on short- and long-term therapy goals. What should a new client know about working with you?

I integrate several different theoretical approaches and collaboratively work with you to gain new perspectives, understand patterns, develop new meanings, and implement changes. I tend to discuss my observations of the "here and now" or the counseling process during the session.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In each counseling session, we will review your progress toward counseling goals, discuss challenges, develop insights, explore patterns, and consider ways to implement changes.
