Meliora Counseling – John Abad, LCPC (Supervising Clinician). Hello, my name is John Abad, LCPC. I am a fluent in Spanish/English bilingual therapist who works with adolescents and adults. Though I have spent 7 years working also with children 5+. My focus areas are Anxiety, Coping Skills, Emotional Disturbance, Parenting, and Stress. I believe in utilizing my preferenace in various modalities and focusing on developing talents and interests. Compared to the average therapist, I am very eclectic and often apply various psychological theories in my practice. I also have various years of experience in clinical supervision and outpatient managerial positions, as I have been a multi-program director for several years. Theories/theorists I know about are CBT, Psychoanalysis, object-relations, schema therapy, Dabrowski, Broffenbrenner, Sternberg’s love triangle, Maslow, Bowlby+Ainsworth, Festinger, Nassim Taleb, Jungian, motivational interviewing, Prochaska, Mahler’s stages, Kubler-Ross, Bowlby not just with Ainsworth, etc. Also, I am a U.S. Marine infantry veteran, A 1/4 raiders, OEF and OIF. Honorable discharge.
I have lived in South America for several years, acculturating to parts of it. I have also been to various other parts of the world during my military career, which led me to understand cultural differences without disregarding my own cultural values I have formed through deliberation, in the many cases where cultures have mutually exclusive values .
Therapy is provided by pre-licensed or licensed associate clinicians under the supervision of John Abad, LCPC. Services are covered by BCBS IL & Aetna ppo plans.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I'm usually directive but will be open to your requests regarding where to take the session. I am confident in my knowledge, which shows in sessions when I try to persuade you of something I find evidence-based. At the same time, I allow free debate and agenda setting. I encourage patient honesty. I respect critical thinking and honesty driven free thought from myself and my patient.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
What to expect at first? I must gather primary general mental health data and create a treatment plan. Thus, I would ask about mental health history, social support network, expectations about therapy, confidentiality, and more.

Pre-licensed associate clinicians practice under incident-to supervision with John Abad, LCPC. At this time, insurance plans that allow incident-to billing are Blue Cross Blue Shield IL and Aetna PPO. Patients using United, Cigna, or CountyCare may schedule directly with John Abad.
We will submit claims directly to your insurance. Patients are only responsible for their copay, deductible, or coinsurance as determined by their plan, and this is billed after your claim has been processed by insurance.
