Getting to know John Benton

Hi there, I'm John! My name is John Benton, LCSW. I earned my Master's in Social Work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I have 35 years of experience counseling at-risk teenagers, families, and adults from many ethnicities and backgrounds. I offer non-judgmental empathy to all who seek help. My approach I use a holistic, strengths-based approach, with expertise in DBT for treating those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). I also use CBT, Exposure Therapy, and other techniques to help clients achieve success in treatment. My focus I have worked with adults, teens, and children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Couples relationship therapy is very effective in helping couples work out their differences. I incorporate Christian Counseling for those who would like this included in their treatment. However, I welcome people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and viewpoints. Client safety and recovery are my main focus. My communication style I have compassion for all clients and incorporate humor to reduce any tension. I speak in respectful tones but tend to be direct and to the point when discussing best practices for clients. I communicate via video and written messaging to support clients in the medium that works best for them. My journey to mental healthcare I have always wanted to help others. As a teenager, I volunteered at elementary schools and transported people to holiday dinners. My three siblings are all teachers, and I see myself as a teacher of sorts by providing education and reflection to help clients improve their lives. My strong faith in God gives me strength and perspective to help others in need, regardless of their beliefs. My goals for you Clients determine their own goals, with clarification from me if needed. We create a written treatment plan with measurable goals so we can track progress and adjust treatment as necessary. Goals will be evaluated at regular intervals.
