Getting to know John Burkin

[IMPORTANT: Please note that I am NOT a Prescriber and do not prescribe medications. I am a Talk Therapy/Psychotherapist. I bring a unique dual-perspective to therapy: 17+ years as a clinical therapist and 20 years as a corporate Human Resources and development professional. I specialize in helping adults (18+) navigate the intersection of mental health and professional high-performance. Whether you are dealing with workplace conflict and career burnout or navigating Anxiety, OCD, and Insomnia (CBT-I), my approach is direct and solution-focused. Trilingual Clinical Services: I provide full clinical services in three languages with the following backgrounds: English: Native fluency. Spanish: I possess communicative fluency and excellent grammar following years of study and immersion in Madrid. While I am not a native speaker, I provide effective care for those comfortable working with a proficient bilingual therapist. German: I hold a BA in German and International Relations and served as an exchange student at the Universität Hamburg. I am pleased to offer clinical services to the German-speaking community. Specialized & Affirming Care: As a gay, Jewish, cisgender male, I provide an expert safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and sexual minorities. My goal is to move you from feeling "stuck" to achieving the "Healing Outcomes" you define, using a blend of CBT, REBT, and skill-based regulation. I welcome clients of all races, religions, body types, and gender expressions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a broad clinical range, from working with severe psychiatric illnesses and substance recovery to coaching high-level executives through career transitions. This experience has taught me one universal truth: every client wants to be heard and understood, but every client requires a different "tool." In my practice, you aren't just "venting." You are building a toolkit. I use traditional trauma resolution and DBT-informed skills to help you regulate emotions and handle high-stress environments—whether that stress is happening in your personal life or at the office. We focus on the "here and now" to create measurable change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I view therapy as a high-level collaboration. I often tell new clients at the end of our intake: "Just because you scheduled this first session does not mean I assume you have hired me." The "fit" is everything. You must feel comfortable talking about the hard stuff—sex, career failures, or the secrets you’ve been carrying. I am direct and use humor to ease the process, but I don't sugar-coat. We aren't here to stay stuck in the past; we are here to work on feeling better today. If you are looking for an inquisitive, results-oriented partner who understands both the clinical and the corporate world, we will likely work well together.
