John Chamberlin, LCSW

John Chamberlin, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a Master’s in Social Work from San Diego State University. My approach to therapy is humanitarian-based, focusing on the cognitive foundations of self-understanding. I generally utilize evidence-based psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and cognitive processing therapy. Occasionally, I incorporate psychodynamic techniques like transference in my exploration of triggering thoughts. Over the past 30 years, I have worked with a diverse range of populations—from prisoners at Donovan State Prison to decorated war veterans through the U.S. Veteran’s Administration. I have treated many clients with trauma-based disorders like PTSD, as well as mood disorders including major depression and bipolar depression. I believe the foundation of effective psychotherapy is an abiding mutual trust between therapist and client. This trust must rest on mutual respect grounded in humanitarian principles, regardless of differences. Reaching and sustaining this sacred place with my clients is the central goal of therapy. Most of my clients come to me feeling stuck in sedentary, stalled lives, held back by fear and trepidation about change. I believe a happy and fulfilling life requires actively moving forward toward short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals—ideally within the context of a sustaining, creative paradigm.
