Psychotherapist
156 Milestone Way, Ste C, Greenville, SC
I'm John Kilgo, a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Olive Tree Counseling & Consultation in Greenville, SC. I hold a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University and a B.A. in Religion from Wofford College. My path to counseling wasn't a straight line. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in banking — and it was there, sitting with people through financial hardship, loss, and broken relationships, that I discovered my calling. Those experiences shaped the way I work: I meet people where they are, without judgment, and I believe everyone deserves support regardless of how their struggle looks from the outside. I specialize in anxiety, depression, and marriage and couples counseling. For anxiety and depression, I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). For couples, I work primarily from the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I also offer premarital counseling, grief counseling, and adult individual therapy. I began my clinical career at Greenville Mental Health Center in 2013, working with adults navigating mental illness and difficult life circumstances. I am a member of the Focus on the Family Christian Counselors Network. I am in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna (Evernorth), UnitedHealthcare, and Aetna. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation — no pressure, just a conversation to see if we're a good fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — and for a lot of people, the hardest part is just reaching out. If you're considering it, here's what I want you to know before we ever meet. I don't believe you need to be in crisis to deserve support. If anxiety is quietly running your life, if your marriage feels more distant than it used to, or if you've been carrying something heavy for longer than you'd like — that's enough reason to talk to someone. You don't have to earn help by suffering more. My approach is collaborative. I'm not going to hand you a diagnosis and a worksheet and send you on your way. We'll work together to understand what's driving what you're experiencing, and we'll build practical tools for changing it. Most people see meaningful progress within 6 to 10 sessions, though many choose to continue longer. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) for individuals, and the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. That said, the approach always follows the person — not the other way around. Sessions are 50 minutes. I am in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Aetna. Individual sessions are $120 and couples sessions are $175 for those using out-of-network benefits. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to start. It's just a conversation — no commitment, no pressure.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every client's journey is different, but here's what the process of working together typically looks like. The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation. We'll talk briefly about what's bringing you in, what you're hoping to get out of therapy, and whether I'm the right fit. There's no obligation — just an honest conversation. The first session is an intake appointment. We'll go deeper into your history, what you're experiencing, and what your goals are. I'll ask questions, you'll ask questions, and by the end we'll have a clearer picture of what we're working toward together. Early sessions focus on building understanding — of your patterns, your history, and what's driving the symptoms or struggles you came in with. Depending on what brings you in, we'll begin introducing tools from CBT, IFS, the Gottman Method, or EFT, whichever approach fits best. As we progress, sessions shift toward applying what you're learning. You'll start noticing changes — in how you respond to anxiety, how you communicate with your partner, or how you carry the weight of what you've been through. Most clients see meaningful progress within 6 to 10 sessions. Some choose to continue beyond that for deeper work. We'll regularly check in on how things are going and adjust the plan as needed. Therapy works best when it's a genuine partnership. My job is to show up prepared, honest, and fully present — and to help you do the same.
