John Powell, LMHC

Psychotherapist
100 S Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL
Do you notice a struggle within yourself to be the person others want you to be, or the person you want to be, but feel it’s impossible? I often work with adolescents, young adults, and couples facing perfectionism, school and job stress, and feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities at work and home, including burnout. I also support those experiencing a loss of meaning and motivation—when it feels like you’re alive but not truly living, perhaps accompanied by grief. These are two sides of the same coin, often resulting in a painful burden: feeling stuck. My approach assumes that the psychological processes of a normal human mind—thoughts and feelings—can be destructive, creating suffering through inflexible patterns. Essentially, our internal systems sometimes become outdated. Rather than focusing on problems, I focus on values. I don’t aim to reduce symptoms; I help you create meaning. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Family Systems, we’ll identify where you’re stuck and how to move forward. For those who have “tried everything,” including other therapies, I’m here to help you get unstuck. This work has also benefited my own journey, and I’d like to share what I’ve learned with you. I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Vermont and a Bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College. New clients should expect to connect with me by phone before their first session and to complete some intake forms.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I view our work as collaborative. We are working together on helping you make important changes in your life. Most of the time, when we're struggling we need to build skills such as, self-compassion, boundaries, make decisions, or staying focused. We will work on building those skills together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work is collaborative. Therapy isn't something done to you, it's something done with you.
