John Ragno, LMHC

John Ragno, LMHC

Psychotherapist
MA
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with more than a decade of experience helping individuals and couples navigate anxiety, relationship conflict, stress, and major life transitions. My approach to therapy is structured, collaborative, and focused on helping people make meaningful progress in their lives rather than feeling stuck in the same patterns. Many clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward in their relationships or personal lives. In our work together, I help slow things down so we can understand what is happening beneath the surface. From there, we focus on developing practical skills and strategies that can be used outside of sessions to create real change. My style is active, direct, and supportive. I believe therapy works best when it is a collaborative process where clients feel both understood and challenged in a constructive way. Sessions often focus on identifying patterns in communication, thoughts, and behavior while building tools for managing anxiety, improving relationships, and navigating difficult decisions. I draw from several evidence-informed approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and narrative-based work. Rather than applying one rigid model, I tailor treatment based on each client’s goals, strengths, and situation. I work with adults and couples who are motivated to better understand themselves, improve their relationships, and build a more balanced and intentional life. My goal is to create a space where clients feel comfortable exploring challenges while also developing the clarity and skills needed to move forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you work with me, you can expect therapy to be active, structured, and collaborative. My goal is not just to listen, but to help you understand patterns, develop practical skills, and make meaningful progress in your life and relationships. Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. In our work together, we slow things down and look at what is happening beneath the surface. We explore how thoughts, behaviors, and communication patterns may be contributing to the challenges you are facing, and then we focus on building tools that help you respond differently. My style is direct, honest, and supportive. I believe therapy should feel like a productive conversation rather than something overly clinical. At times I may challenge certain perspectives or patterns, but it is always done with the goal of helping you gain clarity and move toward the life you want. Clients often appreciate that sessions are not just about talking through problems, but about learning practical strategies they can apply outside of therapy. Whether we are working on anxiety, relationship conflict, communication issues, or life transitions, the focus is always on building skills and creating forward movement. I work best with individuals and couples who are open to reflection, willing to look at patterns honestly, and motivated to make changes in their lives. Therapy works best when both the therapist and client are actively engaged in the process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy is structured, collaborative, and focused on helping clients make real progress in their lives and relationships. In the first session, I focus on understanding what brought you to therapy and what you hope will be different if therapy is successful. We explore the concerns that matter most right now and look at patterns in relationships, stress, communication, or decision making that may be contributing to the situation. This helps establish a baseline for therapy. Once that baseline is clear, the focus shifts to understanding patterns and developing practical skills. Many people notice that the same reactions, thoughts, or communication styles show up across different situations. Part of our work is slowing those patterns down so we can understand them and begin responding differently. Sessions often include tools that can be applied outside of therapy, such as communication strategies, managing anxiety or stress, boundary setting, and navigating difficult conversations. Clients are encouraged to practice these skills between sessions so therapy connects directly to everyday life. A question many clients eventually ask is how they know therapy is working. Progress often shows up when you begin using these tools in real situations. You may notice yourself pausing before reacting, handling conflict differently, or thinking through challenges with more clarity. Over time, sessions often begin to spread out. Weekly appointments may become biweekly or monthly as therapy shifts from problem solving to reviewing progress and strengthening the skills that are working. The goal of therapy is not dependence. It is helping people develop the insight and tools needed to navigate life with greater confidence and independence.
