Getting to know John Weaver

Hi there, I'm John! I am a lifelong Alaskan who has been working in behavioral health since 2006. I graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2010 with a Master of Social Work Degree and have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Alaska since 2013. I have since worked in the communities of Anchorage, Kodiak, and Girdwood. My approach During therapy sessions I will use evidenced-based interventions, often utilizing a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, emotional freedom techniques (EFT or “tapping”), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and Brainspotting. My focus Through my years of practice, I have become highly experienced in helping people heal from post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and life adjustments. I am also skilled in helping people cope and recover from co-occurring disorders, ADHD, grief/loss, substance use, and legal issues. My communication style I work to provide a safe, nurturing, and calm environment during sessions. I provide a non-judgmental and gentle approach to helping treat identified themes which are often quite personal for clients. My journey to mental healthcare I went to school for social work after learning about vulnerable populations in the state of Alaska, more specifically to help children and families who have experienced abuse and neglect. Since then, I have strived to advocate and be a voice for minority populations. I have worked hard to advance excellence in the healthcare practices for both LGBTQIA+ and Alaska Native populations in Alaska communities. When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, listening to music, spending time with family, and learning about other cultures.
