Getting to know Jonathan Ecker

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who is passionate about helping individuals (18+) move towards a life of value and meaning. I’ve been doing so in the Chicagoland area for over 20 years. I became a therapist to help move people from feeling stuck in life towards a life of value and action. As a therapist and certified personal trainer (National Academy of Sports Medicine) I have seen how our thoughts can impact our struggles, our successes, and our enjoyment in life. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from North Park University and my Master of Social Work Degree from Loyola University Chicago. Outside of my therapy practice, I have also provided counseling in hospitals, schools, and community health centers. My diverse background has given me the ability to work with clients struggling with a wide array of issues including anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, family issues, school issues and low self esteem. I believe that my relational yet direct approach helps clients to meet their goals and to more positively engage in life.

As a trained therapist specializing in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), I offer a compassionate, yet direct, approach to helping clients meet their goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session, I focus on getting to know you—your history, current concerns, what’s been helpful or unhelpful in the past, and what you’re hoping for from therapy. This session is about assessment, understanding your needs, and making sure the therapy feels like a good fit. After that, our work becomes more goal-driven. Together, we clarify what matters most to you and identify the changes you want to make in your life. Sessions typically focus on building psychological flexibility—learning how to relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions, while taking meaningful action aligned with your values. Throughout the process, we regularly check in on progress and adjust goals as needed, keeping therapy responsive and practical.
