Getting to know Jorge Abreu

I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1990, with active licenses in New York and New Jersey. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from the City University of New York and completed post-graduate training at the Harlem Family Institute, receiving Certification as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. Before this, I conducted extensive research in Behavioral Physiology, studying anxious and conversion symptoms in inpatient and outpatient settings. My research also focused on neuroanatomical sites linked to motivation and drugs of abuse, correlating with pleasure-seeking behaviors. These subcortical brain sites and neurotransmitters are implicated in the endogenous mechanisms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and other conditions. I have over thirty years of experience with forensic matters, qualifying as an expert witness on death penalty and major crime cases across the U.S. and abroad. I bring knowledge through direct care, supervision, and administrative oversight of treatment with diverse mental health populations. My work ranges from treating individuals with anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress-related difficulties in private practice to addressing extreme disability and disenfranchisement in persons with chronic, severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, delusional illnesses, and disabling personality disorders. Through these experiences, I view psychotherapy as an opportunity to provide guidance, including clinical approaches to reduce debilitating symptoms, uncover root causes (psychogenesis), and offer empathic support to those in treatment, committed to improving quality of life and sustainability.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client working with me, should expect a partner, who is endlessly inquisitive, and devoutly empathic; who will be committed to, and work to meet challenges, alongside them, in order to find ways of reducing presenting symptoms, and creating the necessary infrastructure to uncover underlying trauma, and other pre-existing facilitators of the difficulties that may have become a common thread, or familiar pattern of dysfunction, and pain. My approach is humanistic, and so the history, and narrative of the individual person is invaluable, as are their goals, and objectives, along with their strengths. As a therapist, I use evidence based best practices, in partnership with the person's strengths, and capacity, as the common denominator we seek, to overcome the obstacles along the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When working with clients, I establish and devote a great deal of effort to creating a strong framework for the therapy: clear, and well defined hours, time, and place where we can meet, in a safe, secure, and sober environment that is private, and confidential, with uninterrupted mutual access for the duration of each, and every session. I also conduct a careful screening, and initial assessment, during the first two times we meet, so as to understand the context of difficulties, that present a may present a current crisis, or reflect lifelong patterns of difficulties. During this time, I embark on a holistic review of the person's systems that include: Biological, Psychological, Socio-Economic, and Spiritual transcendence factors, that reflect areas of difficulties and strengths. Following this initial process, we engage in sessions, with a set frequency, wherein, I am interested in hearing from the person's point of view, and listening attentively to how they confront issues, and attempt to resolve them, so as to create a better living environment. My role, is that of guide, and tactician, as we deploy forward in life, and try to remedy what does not seem to work, and energize all that is adaptive, and successfully symptom-free, and healthy, in the person's life.

Ongoing session: $200 for 60 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront
