Getting to know Joseph Girillo

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. I operate my private practice from my home office in Tujunga, CA, where I provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families. My approach My training at the Georgiana Rodiger Center was primarily in the tradition of Psychodynamic & Object-Relations theory and Family Systems theory, but my approach is “eclectic” in the sense that I work with each client with their type of issue in the way that will best fit their needs, not mine. I believe that most of us have the answers to our life's questions within us, and I see my role as being to walk alongside my clients as they discover for themselves their ability to find their way to these answers. My focus My work has included treating patients with a broad spectrum of mental illnesses, from mood disorders to psychosis, active suicidality to chemical dependency, and other addictive behaviors, just to name a few. I have had extensive experience counseling teens in trouble, young adults, trans & LGBTQ+ minors, blended families, people with chemical dependence, and other addictive behavior problems, as well as acute psychiatric disorders. My communication style There will likely be tears as well as laughter during our sessions, as we explore the successes, failures, and ironies that shape our lives. My journey to mental healthcare After receiving my BA in Mass Communications from St Mary's College in 1980, I embarked on a 15-year career in Sales and Marketing Analysis, which I eventually left in order to return to school. I earned my Master’s degree in 2009 in Marital & Family Therapy at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, CA, with a heavy emphasis on diversity and anti-bias sensitivity. I have been involved in the Los Angeles County mental health field since 1999, in acute psychiatric environments since 2004, first at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, then at Adventist
