Getting to know Joseph Hoffman

Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and, in 1997, after 25 years of service, I retired as a Master Sergeant. After retiring, I worked as a farrier (horseshoer) and as a structural welder (ironworker), as those were the most marketable skills I had. I reached a point where old injuries came back to haunt me, and I could no longer walk. Several years later, thanks to surgery through the VA, I can walk again-something I am very thankful for. At that point, I changed professions. Out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, earning my bachelor's degree and then a Master's in Social Work from California State University, Chico, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now work part-time here with Grow Therapy. As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). They also offer group counseling, bereavement counseling, and couples counseling when determined to be supportive to the veteran. Readjustment counseling often involves treating symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such as anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, and sleep disturbances. Many veterans go on to work as first responders, and working with many first responders as well as medical personnel has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a collaborative approach, working with a person to identify/isolate concerns and to develop a blue-print (treatment plan) consisting of realistic goals and objectives that will ideally lead to practical modifications in moods, thoughts and then, behavior. I believe that in most cases, clients know themselves and they know where they would like to be. Clients generally have their own solutions within themselves, although many times another person (with a bit of training) can help one realize and then employ these solutions. This is my job: to work with a client, utilizing skills that I can bring to the table, to help one achieve their goals.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

Plus he is a career retired veteran with plenty of experience with other veterans issues, a valuable asset.
I would suggest him to anyone experiencing PTSD and/or childhood trauma.

This is my first appointment, and it has gone as well as I had hoped. In fact, it has gone so well that I will book another meeting. I feel like I am actually I'm actually heard with good feedback for solutions.

Just what I needed as a Veteran. A blunt Marine. We talk about issue and go over ideas on how to fix them or minimize their impacts. Helped keep me sane though the VA claims process. Lots of great info and process knowledge for Disabled Veterans.
Joe Hoffman is a great therapist who works empathetically with patients and offers a safe, non judgemental environment, and provides humor and very good insight into difficult issues
