Joseph Polich, LCSW

Psychotherapist
930 M.L.K. Jr Blvd, Ste 300, Chapel Hill, NC
I am a therapist who primarily uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help people (those who are struggling, but also those who are doing well) to lead more value-centered and fulfilling lives. Notice I did not say "easier" or "happier," though hopefully that is also the case. I am a warm and friendly person who is not afraid to have difficult and sad conversations. I strive to maintain a person-centered approach and have a broad range of experiences working with all sorts of people. During my career, I have been a practicing attorney, a job coach, a board member of a rape crisis center, a hospital social worker, and a researcher. I am curious and positive, and I believe in the good and powerful in all people. If you are ready to have difficult conversations with someone who is adept at creating a comfortable setting from which to take on personal challenges, then I might be the right person for you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I primarily employ concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, focusing on bolstering our willingness to experience both "positive" and "negative" events in our life with a sense of wonder, awe, and humor. True to ACT principles, I'm relatively flexible and can adapt my style and goals to your personal goals. Therapy should be collaborative, after all. Our first visit will be collecting a lot of background about your upbringing, how you think of things, and what is valuable to you. Afterwards, we will work on strengthening our resolve when it comes to tackling negative thoughts and experiences, sharpening our mind's connection to the present moment, and changing our relationship with our sometimes racing thoughts.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session is a lot of talking, listening, and feeling. Between sessions, we will establish assignments to practice. It's not enough to simply mention an idea or talk about a feeling - we want to engage with our lives more meaningfully, and that takes action.
