Psychotherapist
52 W Main St, Ste #21-A, Somerville, NJ
I’m a professionally trained and experienced therapist who specializes in helping people struggling with Eating Disorders, Anxiety, Depression, OCD, and trauma. I've been working in the field for over 10 years in a variety of positions that range from direct care staff all the way to my present role as a full-time independently practicing therapist. People inevitably ask how I got into this particular line of work, and I usually say that I “found my passion for helping people with eating disorders by accident, but stayed with them on purpose”. As an undergraduate Psychology student at The College of New Jersey, I participated in an internship to develop hands-on experience with people’s real mental health struggles. Knowing little, but having an interest in learning more, I applied to work with a local eating disorder hospital program. A few phone calls and an interview later and I was accepted! Within a few weeks of starting my internship, I pretty much knew this is what I wanted to do. The people, their stories, and the hopeful changes that I saw pointed me down the path that brings me to where I am today. That internship was in 2010 – a long time ago! Since then, I’ve been busy building my skills and learning from my mentors, peers, and most importantly, my clients. I’ve worked at a number of highly reputable eating disorder treatment centers in the tri-state area all while taking in as many great learning experiences as possible. I’ve made it a point to serve people with eating disorders at all levels of care: medical hospital, residential, PHP, IOP, as well as weekly traditional outpatient office visits. This means I understand the spectrum of issues that you may face, and I know how to guide you in the right direction. As a result of focusing my career on treating people with eating disorders, I have had to learn how to treat… well, a lot of other problems! I’ve become skillful in handling co-occurring or stand-alone conditions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic style strikes a balance between compassionate understanding and helping you develop a sense of hope for your future. I blend warmth with firm direction and encouragement to help you make lasting changes. I know and appreciate that my clients are usually emotionally exhausted, but at the same time, they also want work hard to improve their lives. I help my clients find motivation to hope for better things and then find the courage to make those changes bit by bit. Most importantly, I always encourage my clients to create and set their own goals for treatment. What they want to get out of therapy, and what they want their lives to become, is the greatest motivator of all.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process for new clients booking through ZocDoc is simple. In our initial 90-minute meeting we review the basics of the counseling process, do a brief assessment, and develop an early plan to address your issues. To reserve your time for this first meeting, I require a 50% non-refundable deposit. After that, the next 3-4 meetings are a 'trial period' where I will continue to do a deep dive assessment on your issues and give you some early ideas on how to help you feel better. During this time, you will also get a sense of how I think and if I am the right therapist for you. Feel free to ask me any question that you have. Knowing what you are concerned about is an important part of making therapy work well. If we both feel that we are a good fit at the end of those first few meetings, we can continue to work together and address your issues of concern. If we aren't the right fit for each other, I can also help you find and connect with other providers in your area that may be able to help.
