“Josephine is a great therapist. She worked with me for 2 years. She gave me the tools to get to the root causes of my anxieties and insecurities. Also, I would consider her someone who helped me hold myself accountable for my actions, and showed me it's okay to enforce healthy boundaries. Josephine has a sensitive, firm, but gentle approach to working with her clients. She would explore how I felt about certain issues. And then would utilize the session to clarify my unresolved issues. She always explained her process so I wasn't left wondering about why something happened. I highly recommend her.”

Getting to know Josephine Pereira

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. Josephine Pereira, LCSW, is a bilingual psychiatric social worker. Offering her services at Canino Psychotherapy PC, she counsels clients from all communities in Staten Island and Brooklyn, NY. Ms. Pereira earned her master's degree in social work from the City University of New York, Hunter College, in 1987 and began her professional career in 1983 as a caseworker for the City of New York's Special Services for Children (now known as ACS). She is influenced by theorists like Erickson, Maslow, Freud, Mahler, and those who practice behavior modification and cognitive behavioral therapy. Ms. Pereira draws on her patients' strengths and empathizes with them to fully understand their struggles. During therapy sessions, she creates a safe environment for clients to express their mental health concerns without feeling judged.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Beginnings can be difficult, especially if meeting with a psychotherapist is something that you have never done before. Many people have their own preconceived ideas of what to expect because others have shared their own experiences. However, I would encourage my new client to ask questions about the process, identify their individual needs, and begin to learn a little about their overall history in terms of their upbringing and what might have led them to start or return to outpatient mental health. *Please kindly note that we do not provide psychiatry services (medication) and are unable to accept Medicaid insurance plans at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My main goal is to get to know who I am working with and to explore the client's motives for meeting with me at this particular time in their life. I would use open-ended questions to find out what is upsetting or unsettling for them personally and take time to listen and hear what they are saying verbally and emotionally. To take 1 step at a time, to gain their trust so they can gradually become transparent, motivated to make positive changes, actively participate in resolving their past, and accept what they need to do to navigate and enjoy their present and future.

She seemed nice until questions considering my ethnicity, she was just uneducated and ignorant about other cultures. I'm sure she's a fine therapist for some people but if you're a POC you might be better off finding someone else.

I have been attending indivdual psychotherapy sessions with Josephine for about one month, or since May 2023. Since that time I have explored deep into my childhood in ways I have never done. While exploying I realized that some of those experinces have effected my aldut life negativity. Josephine treatment approach empowers me to making different choices, therefore getting better results. Most importantly she challenges me to believe in myself, and that Im a beautiful women inside and out, and to value myself as so. I already see positive changes in my life!!
I saw Josephine for about 2 years (weekly) and during that time we were able to build a strong relationship based on trust, mutual respect and understanding. Josephine gave me a safe space to open up about my issues and she always validated my experience and unwinded me of my strength. She was able to guide me through a challenging personal time & support me in learning new ways to move through them. I'm greatful for her patience, caring and professional skills and would highly reccomend seeing her!
Caring professional! Josephine made me feel comfortable and gained my trust early on. She has a broad range of knowledge and experience that made me feel confident in her ability to target many issues (ie family dynamics, anxiety, work/life balance, marriage & parenting) I face. She asks thought provoking questions and provides useful exercises. I appreciate her scheduling flexibility and found her combination of treatment approaches very helpful.
Josephine is my phsycotherapist for over 3 years. I see a lot of improvement. My emotional state got much better. Nothing but a good experience.
Josephine was my psychotherapist for more than 3 years. Her sessions were informative, and she helped me to look at situations realistically so that I could manage them without feeling anxious or overwhelmed. She has an uncan way of helping her patients feel confident and inwardly secure to make sound decisions. I trusted her professional support and would often leave my sessions with optimism that was uplifiting and encouraging. Josephine is fully equipped to make her patients feel comfortabl My feelings and thoughts were heard and validated. I enjoyed my sessions termendously and highly recommend her as an effective and empowering phychotherapist.
