“My time with Josh was truly transformative for me. I was a patient of Josh for a little over 2 years and in that time, I was really forced to take a closer look at how my past was impacted my current behavior and relationships. Josh’s incorporatiom of music into our sessions was also very unique for me. I found it meditative and comforting. I am so grateful for the care, compassion, and respect that Josh showed me in our time working together. I highly recommend Josh as a provider.”

“Josh is amazing. He is easily the best therapist I have ever had, and I've had a number of very good ones. He helped me move through my emotional scar tissue as a queer/genderqueer person—creatively, interpersonally, psychodynamically. He has a particularly sensitive, intuitive, real way of connecting. I can't recommend him enough. ”

Getting to know Joshua Millrod

I'm not in-network with any insurance carriers, but I'd be happy to work with you to get out-of-network reimbursement for our sessions. Please check with your insurance about your out-of-network benefits prior to booking. Josh Millrod is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist with a Master’s in Music Therapy from New York University. He blends talk, music, and mindfulness to help adults and adolescents work through challenges related to anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and major life changes. His creative, trauma-informed approach caters to people who overthink, get tied up in knots looking for the right word, or are easily overwhelmed. He works with a mix of clients—from those who have never before been to therapy to people who have tried a variety of approaches but haven’t seen the change they had hoped for. He also provides ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, a form of legal psychedelic psychotherapy, for adult clients who would benefit from breaking out of their ordinary ways of thinking and feeling.

What should a new client know about working with you?

We’ll work together to create a safe space for you to explore your emotions without getting overwhelmed, whether you’re feeling sadness, grief, anger, worry or just numb. No matter what, I’m here to accompany you through exploring, expressing and healing. I’m not going to ask you to fill out worksheets or stick to a rigid protocol regardless of what comes up in the session. I’m also not going to just listen passively and then try to explain to you why I think you’re having a hard time. I’m probably going to ask some questions about how you’re feeling in the moment, what’s happening in your body or what song we could listen to connect with an emotion that words aren’t capturing. I’m not going to impose anything on you and I’ll always do my best to answer any questions you might have about me. Ultimately, we’re in this together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After an initial consultation where we’ll talk about what brings you to therapy and how I work, we’ll decide if we’re a good fit for working together. Our early sessions will focus building a connection so that we can safely work through the issues that brought you to therapy. We’ll talk, listen to music, visualize and create images and help you connect with what’s going on in your body. It might feel weird at times, but, as we work together more, you’ll find yourself noticing small triggers before you react or get overwhelmed. We’re going to work together to find what you need and what works for you.
