Getting to know Judith Ofori-Akwaboah

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially when you are looking for someone who will truly understand you—not just your symptoms, but your experiences, relationships, culture, and the things you may have difficulty putting into words. I’m Judith Ofori-Akwaboah, a psychotherapist who provides a warm, supportive, and culturally responsive space where you can be yourself without feeling judged or having to constantly explain your experiences. I work with children, teens, young adults, and adults navigating concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, self-esteem, identity, family and relationship difficulties, life transitions, and emotional regulation. I also enjoy working with clients who may feel overwhelmed, stuck, misunderstood, or unsure of where to begin. For adults and young adults, therapy may include exploring past experiences, relationship patterns, identity, boundaries, self-worth, and the connection between what you have experienced and how you respond today. Together, we work toward developing healthier coping strategies, greater self-understanding, and more confidence in navigating your life. When working with children and adolescents, I use developmentally appropriate and engaging approaches—including play, storytelling, creative activities, and expressive techniques—to help young clients communicate their emotions, build coping skills, strengthen self-esteem, and better navigate school, friendships, family relationships, and everyday stress. My approach is integrative and individualized. Depending on your needs, I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), mindfulness, and other evidence-informed interventions. I believe therapy should be collaborative rather than one-size-fits-all. As a Ghanaian American woman and immigrant, I also understand the importance of culture, family expectations, identity, and belonging.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy should feel like a collaborative conversation—not a place where you are judged, talked at, or expected to have all the answers. I take time to understand what is bringing you to therapy, what has worked or not worked in the past, and what you hope will be different. From there, we create a treatment approach that fits your goals, personality, developmental stage, and lived experiences. I use an integrative approach that may include CBT, DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness, and other evidence-informed interventions. Sessions are structured enough to give you practical tools while still leaving room to explore the deeper experiences and patterns contributing to your current concerns. For children and teens, I use developmentally appropriate and engaging techniques such as play, storytelling, creative expression, and activities that make it easier to talk about emotions and experiences. My goal is for clients to leave therapy feeling heard, understood, and equipped with skills they can actually use outside of the therapy room.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know one another, discuss what brought you to therapy, identify your goals, and begin understanding the patterns that may be affecting your emotional well-being. I don't believe you need to tell your entire life story on the first session. We will move at a pace that feels appropriate and create goals together. For adults and young adults, we may explore anxiety, relationships, family dynamics, self-esteem, identity, past experiences, boundaries, life transitions, or patterns that you would like to change. For children and adolescents, I focus on creating a comfortable therapeutic relationship first. I use play, storytelling, creative activities, and developmentally appropriate interventions to help young clients express themselves and build emotional and coping skills. Throughout treatment, we will regularly check in about your progress and adjust our approach as your needs change.

Judith has been an outstanding therapist for my daughter. She genuinely looks forward to her weekly sessions. Judith incorporates creative play therapy techniques, including storytelling and expressive activities, to help my daughter explore her emotions and thoughts in a way that feels natural and engaging. My daughter even creates short comic-style stories about her day, which Judith encourages as an alternative way to express herself when writing feels difficult.

I cannot recommend my therapist highly enough. From the very first session, I felt genuinely heard, respected, and supported. She created a safe, non-judgmental space where it’s easy to be open and honest, even about difficult topics. Her insight, compassion, and thoughtful guidance have helped me gain clarity, develop healthier coping tools, and make real, meaningful progress. What truly sets her apart is how attentive and personalized her approach is—I always feel like my sessions are tailored to me, not a one-size-fits-all method. Working with her has been incredibly valuable, and I’m deeply grateful for the impact she has had on my well-being.
Judith has been an exceptional therapist for my son. My son is excited to have therapy each week. Judith uses games & art to help my son express himself and learn about his emotions & thoughts. He even creates comic books about his day and told me that Judith said he can do this when he doesn’t feel like writing it all down.
Judith has a way of truly making you feel listened to. I feel safe in her care and recommend her to all my friends. I am thankful for a provider like her!!
I have a deep appreciation for the therapy I have received with Judith. She has been able to guide me through challenging moments and be a great sounding board for my experiences.
Miss Judith has been amazing with my child. My child struggles with various behavioral issues and she has been able to tackle them individually. She assessed each problem and found a course of action that tackled the root of the cause for each. She is a very understanding person to work with. She has made an impact on my child as well as myself. I highly recommend her services. I am so sad to see her go, but I am very appreciative of all that she has helped with. Wherever she goes, her services should be cherished because she has a way of connecting with parents and children. In this line of work, it’s very difficult to keep everyone appease and she has somewhat accomplished just that. I am going to miss her dearly and I am happy of getting the chance to know her for me and my child.
Very professional, down to earth provider. Highly recommend for young adults and teenagers. Couldn’t ask for a better therapist. She don’t tell you what you want to hear but what you needs to. She helped me through a lot for a year. She is extremely patient and understanding and flexible.
An incredible therapist. She’s patient , compassionate, and highly skilled. I always feel understood, supported, and empowered after each session. I’ve made real progress thanks to their guidance. Truly grateful!
