“Julie is an amazing therapist! I’ve had therapists before who I just didn’t click with, but I felt really comfortable with her from the start. She’s highly empathetic and made me feel heard — along with giving me tangible tools to continue working on things outside of her sessions. She knows when to support & when to challenge me. I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking for a knowledgeable & compassionate match. ”

Getting to know Julia (Julie) Siegel

*I accept Mount Sinai Top Tier UMR insurance and the NYSHIP empire plan. I am an out-of-network provider with other insurances. I am licensed in NY, NJ, and FL, practicing virtually. About: As a psychodynamic therapist practicing in the field for over a decade, I have had a wide range of training and working experiences that allow me to meet each of my client’s unique needs. I am passionate about supporting individuals in finding a deeper connection to themselves and within their relationships, and specialize in relational anxiety and trauma. I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients from various cultural backgrounds and identities, in particular young adults, women, first-generation folks, students, adolescents, and medical professionals. One of my core values is to provide identity-affirming therapy and hold space for people of all identities, genders, and sexualities. Education/Training: I graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Science in Social Work, and from Washington University in St. Louis with dual degrees in Psychology and Art. I received a post-graduate certificate in Interpersonal Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from the William Alanson White Institute, and have additional training in IFS, EFT, DBT, and CBT. Prior to starting my private practice, I worked in multiple mental health treatment settings at Mount Sinai Hospital. I’ve been a supervisor of social work students, licensed psychotherapists, and psychiatry residents. At Mount Sinai’s psychiatric outpatient clinic, I worked both as a clinical coordinator and therapist providing mental health treatment to frontline healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. I have substantial experience treating stress and trauma-related syndromes. I also helped to establish and launch the Mount Sinai Partial Hospital Program, providing intensive therapy to those in acute mental health crises.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am warm, down-to-earth, with a gentle and playful, yet direct and confrontational style. I value collaboration, welcoming feedback throughout our work together to ensure you get the most out of your treatment. Therapy isn’t easy work- it can bring discomfort to confront parts of yourself and your life that are distressing to you. However, this is a natural step in the healing process that we will discuss on an ongoing basis as we work together. I respect your time and commitment and will do everything I can to help you achieve your goals. I specialize in a wide range of areas including anxiety, relationship issues (breakups, dating, marital issues, peer relationships), trauma, depression, and grief. I have particular interest in relationship anxiety and interpersonal dynamics. My approach is eclectic and tailored to your specific needs. I work relationally and specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy, informed by interpersonal and attachment-based perspectives. I also incorporate mindfulness techniques as well as elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, to improve one’s ability to cope with challenging emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It takes courage to start therapy, and reaching out is a huge step. Whether you are feeling anxious, stuck in life, unfulfilled, or are having relationship issues- you want to build a more meaningful life, with hope for new possibilities. My aim is to help you not only relieve suffering, but also to make lasting changes that will allow you to grow into a more authentic, confident, and empowered person. You might feel, “I know what my problem is” but find yourself repeating the same behaviors or patterns of thinking. Therapy will help shine a light on barriers that may be out of your awareness, while also developing tools to change. Part of this process may involve processing past experiences as well as cultural and familial influences that continue to impact you today. Additionally, as a relational therapist I believe life is most meaningful when you have a deep sense of connection to yourself and within your relationships. At times we can feel lonely or disconnected from those we care about. Therapy can help you to improve communication and strengthen your relationships. We will discover how patterns within your relationships might work for and against your sense of life satisfaction.
