Julia Wellisch, LCSW

Psychotherapist
155 N Michigan Ave, Ste. 201, Chicago, IL
Hi, I’m Julia (she/her/hers), and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker! Growing up, I witnessed how therapy could be life-changing for both myself and those I loved. I became a therapist because I believe everyone deserves that space to show up, without fear of judgment, to process the many ups and downs of life. Through my work in community mental health and university-based settings, I learned how important it is that therapy is client-centered and strengths-based, while also acknowledging the impact of greater society on a client’s wellbeing. I am passionate about helping people adapt, cope, and make meaning out of difficult situations. I love being an advocate for my clients; validating, collaborating, and gently challenging them when appropriate. I am always in awe of people’s capacity for resilience and feel quite lucky that my job is to accompany individuals on this journey.

Getting to know Julia Wellisch

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with adolescents, young adults, adults, families, and couples. My clinical specialties include anxiety, OCD, depression, trauma, crisis management, sexual and relationship concerns, identity development, life transitions, and grief and loss. I am especially passionate about working with teenagers and young adults, including those in the LGBTQIA+ community, who are coming into their own and exploring what it means to be human. I also have a particular interest in working with couples, and will provide a non-judgmental space to explore connection and communication.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I aim to create a collaborative, comfortable, and curiosity-driven environment that allows for real development of a therapeutic relationship. I’ll meet you where you’re at and let you take the lead in how you’d like to use our space and time, but won’t shy away from offering my own insights. I love to encourage curiosity and challenge patterns or beliefs that may be keeping you stuck. I draw primarily from psychodynamic and relational therapeutic approaches, while weaving in CBT, DBT, ACT, and EMDR as appropriate. I am a fan of using humor in sessions - not all of our work has to be heavy, and sometimes laughing together can offer unexpected relief and a deeper feeling of connection. My goal is to create a collaborative space where you feel secure enough to be honest, supported enough to keep going, and challenged enough to grow.
