Getting to know Julie Barzal

I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory designation in Ohio and a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts, holding a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Akron, with over 6 years of professional therapy experience. I have worked with adult and adolescent clients addressing LGBTQ-IA concerns, stress, anxiety, depression, anger management, low self-esteem/self-confidence, grief, blended family issues, substance use disorders, and family management of SUD disorders. In practice, I utilize various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, problem-solving techniques, motivational interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, client-centered therapy, and strengths-based therapy. I have always been passionate about helping and advocating for others, striving to be the positive change I wish to see in the world. I am experienced in diagnosing DSM-5 mental health disorders, providing direct counseling and telehealth therapy, as well as crisis and case management services with adolescents and adults. Personally, I embody empathy, engagement, advocacy, a tireless work ethic, active listening, critical thinking, cultural humility, gender and identity inclusion, and a client-centered, strengths-based focus that meets clients where they are. I want my clients to know that their time with me offers an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to begin therapy takes courage, and I am proud of you for prioritizing your mental health. I am mindful that each person’s story is unique, reinforcing the importance of meeting clients where they are in their personal mental health journey. It is my hope that our work together will be challenging, insightful, and empowering because YOU are worth it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Going through therapy with a therapist can be a very beneficial experience for individuals who want to work through their mental health challenges and improve their overall well-being. Here are some steps you can take to make the most of your therapy experience: - Find the right therapist: The first step is to find a therapist who is a good fit for you. Look for someone who specializes in the type of issues you want to address and whose style matches your preferences. I hope I can be that person for you. - Set clear goals: It's important to have clear goals for therapy so that you and I are on the same page. In our first session, we will discuss your goals and work together to create a treatment plan that outlines the steps you will take to achieve those goals. - Try to be open and honest with me about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am here to help you, and I can only do so if I have a clear understanding of what's going on. - Trust the process: Therapy can be a long process, and it's important to trust that the work you're doing with me will pay off in the end. It's also important to be patient and not expect instant results. - Practice self-care: In addition to attending therapy sessions, it's important to practice self-care on a regular basis. This may include activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones. - Keep an open mind: Finally, it's important to keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. As your therapist, I may suggest different techniques or approaches that you haven't tried before, and it's important to be receptive to these suggestions. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process between you and me, so be sure to communicate your thoughts and concerns along the way. With the right mindset and a willingness to work, therapy can be a transformative experience that helps you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life.

Working with Julie has been fantastic
Julie was wonderful. I was worried that I would go into this appointment not wanting to share any of my feelings. I will say that the entire appointment I felt completely comfortable talking, sharing deep feelings. & I felt safe and heard the entire time. She gave me a lot of tools to use going forward, and we set up an appointment for next week. I feel confident in seeing her going forward to help a lot of my mental health needs. I would absolutely recommend her to my family or friends.
