Justin Talkish, LMHC

Psychotherapist
WA
I'm Justin Talkish, a therapist with 20 years of experience, including the last 4 years in private practice. I hold a Master's in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. I'm deeply devoted to helping clients rebuild their lives after trauma, grief, or loss. My therapeutic approach draws extensively from my own lived experiences, fostering a safe, supportive space where vulnerability, resilience, and healing are shared and nurtured together. I'm especially committed to serving those often overlooked in therapy, including Black Americans, LGBTQ individuals, and those impacted by religious trauma. Overcoming personal challenges, I offer unique support to those who might otherwise feel unseen. I specialize in tools to manage intense emotions: distress tolerance skills for feeling overwhelmed, like in panic attacks, and emotion regulation skills to help control thoughts and feelings, reducing emotional ups and downs. I support clients in building healthier relationships and developing a confident sense of self they're proud of, free from shame. I understand how overwhelming emotions can feel, especially when they seem to control your life. My goal is to help you build skills to manage distress, regulate emotions, and create healthier relationships. Together, we'll work on building a sense of self you're proud of. If you're ready to take the next step toward healing, I'm here to support you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What to Expect in Therapy At Justin Talkish Counseling PLLC, I believe healing begins in a safe, compassionate space where your story is honored without fear or judgment. As a trauma specialist, I offer a client-centered, DBT-informed approach that respects your lived experience while equipping you with practical tools for growth. A Safe Start From our first session, we’ll build trust through warmth, respect, and curiosity. I understand how vulnerable it is to seek support, especially when carrying trauma. My role is to meet you where you are and create a secure space to explore what feels heavy. Tailored to You Your journey is unique. We’ll co-create a plan based on your goals, values, and challenges. A gentle, thoughtful assessment helps us understand how past pain may still be influencing your present. In Session Each session begins with a check-in—emotionally and physically. We may focus on skill-building, self-reflection, or trauma processing, depending on your needs. I draw from DBT to support: Mindfulness – staying present Distress Tolerance – navigating intense emotions Emotion Regulation – building calm and control Interpersonal Effectiveness – setting boundaries with confidence Some sessions may focus on grounding, others on deeper healing—all paced with your consent. Trauma-Informed and Empowering If trauma is part of your story, we’ll move at a pace that feels safe. I support you in reclaiming parts of yourself that feel lost or silenced—with care and compassion. Assessment and Growth Early sessions may involve exploring symptoms tied to trauma, anxiety, or depression. While I don’t prescribe medication, I offer thorough assessments and can collaborate with your medical team when needed. Ongoing Support Therapy with me is dynamic. We’ll regularly reflect and adapt. My aim is not to “fix” you, but to support your journey toward greater wholeness, self-trust, and emotional freedom.
