What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a relaxed, conversational style of working with clients. I will be very interested in you and in getting a detailed picture of your life circumstances and concerns. I am a very engaged listener and not distant. I do not adhere to a specific therapeutic model, but rather my approach is eclectic and I make an effort to tailor it to each individual I am working with as I get to know you and your concerns. I do believe that childhood experiences are very important in developing an understanding of how an individual is coping in adulthood, and therefore I will devote time in subsequent sessions to exploring your childhood and relationships in your family of origin. Depending on your current level of distress, I may also provide some initial suggestions and/or tools to help you alleviate your distress as we begin to work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a participating provider with Cigna. I offer a sliding scale for those without insurance. Prior to our first session, I will ask that you complete a very short Introductory Questionnaire and sign an informed consent. Our initial session will be a free consultation. I will start by getting to know you and what you are experiencing that led you to seek therapy at this time. I will ask a lot of questions. In our initial session, I will need to assess whether I am best suited to work with you, depending on the issues that you are dealing with. If I feel that I am not the best person to work with you, I will let you know that at our first meeting. Depending on your level of distress, I may provide suggestions and/or tools to help alleviate your distress. As we continue to work together, I will ask about your family of origin and early life history and explore possible connections between what you are currently experiencing and your history. Depending on the concerns you bring, I may also place on ongoing focus on coping skills to help with your current distress. I will want to partner with you in the work that we do together and will seek to know what you hope to gain from therapy.
