Kahlia Burruss, LMHC

Kahlia Burruss, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over six years of experience working with adolescents and adults across diverse settings. My background in psychology and criminal justice informs a well-rounded, trauma-informed approach to care, allowing me to understand the complex systems and experiences that shape each individual’s life. I began my career in 2019 supporting adolescents with autism, those in foster care, and individuals experiencing behavioral challenges. This work deepened my commitment to providing compassionate, client-centered care and has shaped my transition into working primarily with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, along with undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), helping clients develop practical skills to challenge unhelpful thought patterns, build resilience, and create meaningful, lasting change. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to each individual. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of how to move forward. You may be navigating a difficult transition, managing anxiety, dealing with relationship struggles, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself. My goal is to offer a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences and begin to build tools that foster greater clarity, resilience, and emotional well-being. You're not alone, and healing is possible—with the right support, growth can unfold in meaningful and lasting ways. I take a collaborative, client-centered approach rooted in empathy and evidence-based practices. When you bring your effort and openness to the process, and I bring guidance and support, we can uncover the tools and strengths that have always been within you. Therapy is about empowering you to step into your fullest, most authentic self. Together, we’ll untangle patterns that no longer serve you, gently process emotions that feel too heavy to hold alone, and build confidence to meet life’s challenges with self-awareness and strength. With compassion and commitment on both sides, you can connect with the life you truly deserve. You're not alone, I’m here to help you find your way forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy is intentional, collaborative, and growth-focused. I work best with clients who are ready to actively engage in the process and are committed to meaningful change. In our initial sessions, we’ll take time to explore what brought you to therapy, your current challenges, and the goals you’d like to work toward. I gather a comprehensive understanding of your experiences, patterns, and strengths so we can create a personalized treatment plan that feels both supportive and effective. Ongoing sessions are structured yet flexible. We will identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, process emotions in a safe and supportive space, and develop practical tools you can apply in your daily life. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and mindfulness techniques to help you better understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I also believe therapy works best when it extends beyond the session. You may be encouraged to reflect, practice new skills, or apply insights between sessions to reinforce your growth. Progress comes from consistency, honesty, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. My role is to guide, support, and challenge you when needed, but lasting change comes from the work we do together. If you are ready to show up for yourself, I am here to support you every step of the way.
