Kaitlin McMahon, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York State, providing therapy for teens (16+) and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, grief and loss, trauma, life transitions, and general stress and burnout. My primary area of focus is PTSD, C-PTSD (Complex PTSD), and developmental trauma, and I have specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). My approach to therapy is grounded, collaborative, and tailored to each individual. I aim to create a safe and supportive space where clients feel understood and able to explore their experiences at a pace that feels manageable. I integrate evidence-based practices with attention to both emotional and physiological experiences, particularly in the context of trauma. In our work together, I help clients identify patterns that may be contributing to distress, develop greater insight into their experiences, and build practical tools for regulation and coping. My goal is to support meaningful, lasting change while fostering a therapeutic relationship that feels steady, respectful, and authentic.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a collaborative, steady, and attuned approach to therapy. Sessions are a space where you can speak openly at your own pace, without pressure or judgment. I balance providing support with gently helping you notice patterns, deepen insight, and work toward meaningful change. My style is warm and engaged, while also structured and focused. I draw from evidence-based approaches including EMDR, CBT, DBT, Somatic Experiencing, IFS, ERP, among others, and tailor treatment to your needs and goals. Clients can expect that we will move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, especially when working with trauma or overwhelming emotions. Therapy is not about rushing or "fixing", but about building understanding, stability, and lasting change over time. It's important to me that clients feel respected, heard, and actively involved in the process. We will work together to clarify what feels most helpful and adjust as needed along the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My initial sessions focus on getting a clear understanding of what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, and relevant personal history. We also begin identifying goals and what you hope will feel different as a result of our work together. In ongoing sessions, we typically begin by checking in on what has been most present for you since we last met. From there, we explore thoughts, emotions, patterns, and experiences in a way that feels manageable and grounded. Depending on your needs, we may focus on building coping strategies, increasing insight, processing past experiences, or working with present-day stressors. For clients working on trauma, sessions may also include EMDR or other trauma-focused approaches when appropriate, always at a pace that prioritizes safety and stability. Each session is collaborative, and we regularly revisit goals to ensure the work continues to feel relevant and supportive.
