I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of a private practice (Thirteen Willows Therapy). Through my integrative approach I work with individuals, couples, groups, and families, drawing on CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and the Gottman Method. My clinical work concentrates in five areas: Grief, loss, and end of life. Bereavement, anticipatory grief, and the caregiving burnout. Death doula services, which allows me to accompany families through the dying process itself rather than meeting them only in its aftermath. Personal development and high-performance mental health. I work with people whose work requires sustained performance under scrutiny such as elite and professional athletes, executives, physicians, attorneys, and first responders. Together we work on performance anxiety, burnout, identity, and the weight of pressure that rarely gets named outside the consulting room. Couples and family systems. Communication breakdown, infidelity recovery, premarital and prenuptial counseling, blended-family adjustment, co-parenting, and the therapeutic role within collaborative divorce. General adult mental health. Personal development, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, OCD, self-esteem, and life transitions. Thirteen Willows also offers travel and adventure therapeutic services, for clients whose work is better done outside a consulting room than within one. Sessions are structured and goal-directed. We define what change would look like, identify the patterns sustaining the problem, and measure against that. My working assumption is that you are the expert on your own life; my job is to bring clinical framework and honest and direct feedback.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The first session is an assessment rather than a deep dive. I'll ask what brought you in, some history, and what you want to be different six months from now. By the end we'll have a working direction. Most people leave with a clearer frame than they came in with, but meaningful change takes longer than one visit, and I'd rather set that expectation honestly up front. I work directly. If I notice a pattern, I'll name it. Some clients find that clarifying and some find it uncomfortable in the first few weeks and both are normal. I appreciate a collaborative environment with my clients; tell me when something doesn't land. That feedback makes the work better, not worse. Fit matters more than credentials. If after a few sessions this doesn't feel like the right match, say so and I'll help you find someone better suited. That's part of good care, not a failure of it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions will look be checking what's shifted since we last met, including anything you tried in-between. The bulk of the hour goes to whatever is most present that week. We close by naming what you're taking with you, so the session ends somewhere rather than just running out of time. What the middle looks like depends on the work. With couples, I'll often slow a conversation down as it's happening in the room and work with what occurs between you, rather than with what each of you reports about home. In anxiety and trauma work, sessions are more structured. We build specific skills and then put them to use. In grief work I follow your pace; there's no schedule that work is supposed to keep to. I'll sometimes suggest something to try between sessions. It's an offer, not homework, and the work doesn't stall if you don't get to it.
