Kalpana Daswani has spent years empowering clients to be the most unapologetic version of themselves. Her approach to treatment is eclectic, as she's trained in psychodynamic therapy, CBT, and DBT. As a bicultural, trilingual clinician, Kalpana is well aware of the importance of culture, your unique environment, and family background and the roles these play in daily life. Born in the Gateway of the Amazon and raised in numerous different countries, she would best be described as a Global Citizen. Her unique background has allowed her to understand that individuals don't fit in a box. Kalpana has provided psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of mental health issues using a variety of techniques, from behavioral to psychoanalytic, at practices including The Karen Horney Clinic, Park Slope Center for Mental Health, Brooklyn Psychotherapy, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Miami Children’s Hospital, Family Preservation, Paren Child Center, and Multilingual Psychotherapy Centers. She holds a PsyD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Albizu University, a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Palm Beach Atlantic University, and a Bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to individual therapy or marriage counseling is integrative. This means that I draw from several different types of therapy to find what will best meet your needs I have extensive training in Trauma Focused CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Marriage Counseling, and Psychoanalysis. I have been working with adolescents, adults, and couples for over a decade providing support around depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, identity struggles and life transitions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe each individual has what it takes to overcome any obstacle and get through what life puts in front of you. Sometimes, we just need help accessing our inner wisdom and unique strengths, as well as the opportunity to learn new skills and different ways of approaching problems in a caring environment. I strive to provide an environment where you can safely identify and explore issues that may be getting in the way of a more rewarding life or fulfilling relationships.

I've been consulting with Kalpana for the last 6 months, which in fact, have been some of the most challenging months of my life so far, both personally and professionally. While I had been doing therapy before, Kalpana brought a positive change to how I approached my life as she understood my cultural needs and really took the time to guide me through this tough period. She provides a good balance of listening and coaching. Her sessions are structured, but it never feels like she's just following a template. She's super flexible and accommodating, which I really appreciate, especially when I feel like 1 hour week is not sufficient to close out the conversation. Overall, highly recommend Kalpana and her services!

I've been seeing Kalpana Daswani for about two years now. After a missed connection with another therapist who just wasn't a good fit I was lucky to stumble upon Kalpana's profile during an online search. As someone who has had different therapists over the years, I most appreciate Kalpana's empathetic bedside manner. She is supportive yet direct. As compared to other therapists I very much feel like our sessions are two way conversations as opposed to the style where a therapist just pushes every question back to me. Before I started my sessions with Kalpana, I had never been to therapy before. I was unsure what to expect and how the conversations were supposed to go. Kalpana was patient and explained our shared goals and objectives from the beginning, and she regularly checks in to make sure that I am still feeling positive about the process and our relationship. I reached out to kalpana for a few issues that i identified but i couldnt resolve. Im not an expert. Kalpana gives you a safe space to share information about you that you are comfortable with sharing. She's very flexible and will work with you to create an environment that helps you. For instance, for me: She armed me with tools, techniques, and knowledge to better understand what i feel, what triggers my behavior, and if it is effective for the time being or ineffective and a lot more. By using what i learned in my sessions, I was able to mitigate/process and understand some of the justifications i pursue therapy for. And this is just the beginning! I met Dr. Daswani many years ago at a hospital during her residency. Growing up in a chaotic home, I was struggling with Depression and substance abuse. I was a terrible patient, miss appointments etc. Most clinics kicked me out. I knew things would be different when I received a call from Kalpana. She left me a warm, non-judgmental voice message each time I did not show up. My life was a mess and I struggled to get out of bed. I’m so grateful she did not give up on me.I quit all substances and turned my life around. I do not need any medication. She has been my greatest cheerleader. She has taught me many emotional regulation skills. I also discovered I had limiting beliefs and irrational thoughts. She is not afraid to call me out on my BS when I almost relapse and go back to old patterns. I was assigned to another therapist when she left the hospital. I was the stalker who looked her up online. I’m grateful she finally owns her practice. My fear was losing a great clinician.

Kalpana is incredibly genuine and easy to talk to. She can pick up on your behavioral patterns and feelings quite quickly. With an efficient understanding of what is happening she provides you with the most logical solutions but also works with you to figure them out. So eventually they are decisions that come from you, Kalpana just guides you there effortlessly. (She is also super flexible and understanding of our crazy lives!!)

She has no problem letting me lead the session but also knows when to cut in at important moments. And while I enjoy encouragement and validation when she finds I’m handling something positively and in a healthy way, she’s also quick to point out when it appears like something is not serving me. Or rather, she’ll guide me toward realizing that for myself which I think is really the entire point of therapy. Best of all, she makes all my worst thoughts sound normal and appropriate and never lets me forget that all I need to do is listen to my feelings. 10/10, always a wonderful experience after all these years working together.
Dr. Kalpana was very responsive. I scheduled an appointment on a Sunday night. I received an immediate email to confirm the appointment. She also inquired if I was urgently seeking help and offered to move my appointment earlier. I was very impressed with her responsiveness. She also takes the time to explain how therapy works, and how I would know if we're making progress. Nobody has ever taken the time to explain and get to know me. I never felt rushed! You can tell she is very passionate about her profession and very knowledgeable. My relationships have improved and I'm able to use her DBT techniques manage my anxiety.
