Kara Purves, IMFT

Psychotherapist
17900 Jefferson Park Rd, Suite 101, Middleburg Heights, OH
I provide personalized care and work collaboratively with individuals, couples, and families, tailoring my approach to your needs and goals. I believe that each person's strength and potential for healing and growth lie within. The goal is to create a safe and supportive space for exploring experiences and developing healthy coping mechanisms and practical skills, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life. I hold a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from The University of Akron. My main area of focus is EMDR Therapy with couples and individuals. With couples, I concentrate on relational trauma, such as infidelity, abuse, or loss of a child. With individuals, I address childhood trauma, attachment wounds, sexual abuse, religious trauma, and other traumatic events. I also provide CBT, EFT, and DBT Therapy. Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, emphasizes the importance of embracing and valuing an object's history. In life, uninvited challenges and mistakes are opportunities for growth and transformation. Therapy is not just a healing method but a belief that breaks and repairs are valuable parts of one's story.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I often use Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in my practice. In your first session, we will explore and construct a treatment plan to fit your needs and goals and then adapt as needed in an ongoing collaboration. Just as a well-fitted suit or dress is not a one-size-fits-all and requires customization, so does a well-fitted treatment plan. I also use EMDR Therapy to help clients heal and reprocess trauma that is "stuck" and prevents progress even after talk therapy. Clients have described me as validating, easy to talk to, informative, and direct when calling out bulls**. I meet my clients where they are in their journey and then gently guide and nudge them toward their potential for healing and growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My main area of focus is trauma, whether individually healing from childhood abuse, an attachment wound, sexual abuse, a sudden loss, or other traumatic event, or relationally healing from infidelity, domestic abuse, divorce, infertility, or other painful situations. I help clients heal first, then repair and grow, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
