There's a moment in therapy that never gets old: when things start to click. When someone is learning something new about themselves, building routines that stick, and practicing skills that make life feel more manageable. After 12 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, that moment still gets me every time. I work with young adults and adults navigating depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and life transitions. I especially enjoy working with college students, and have a particular passion for supporting people through pet loss, a grief that is profound and real, and one that deserves to be taken seriously. Whether therapy is new to you or you've been down this road before, starting can feel like a lot. My style is relaxed, welcoming, and caring, and from the first session, my focus is on making sure you feel comfortable and heard. That foundation matters, because the clicking can't happen until it does.

What should a new client know about working with you?

DISCLAIMER: We are not able to accept Medicare or Medicaid plans at this time. My path to becoming a therapist began in college when I was volunteering at a children’s group home. One day on the playground, I encouraged a young girl to talk to her social worker about a concern she had mentioned to me. About a week later, we were on the swings and she was beaming. She told me she wouldn’t be changing placements without her siblings, and then she said, “Speak up and talk to Kara, that’s what all the kids should do.” This line stayed with me ever since, and led me down a road of showing up for people in a meaningful way. I became a therapist to empower people, and to give them a different experience in therapy through the power of advocacy. To each session, I bring humor, light-heartedness, and empathy while believing in collaboration and respect, which helps me become a trusted support system for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy looks different for everyone, and we'll work together to shape the experience so it's most useful and genuine for you. To achieve this, I draw on elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to help you manage emotions, cope through challenges, and ultimately see things more clearly. This approach is person-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and creative, because the right path forward looks different for every person who walks through the door.
