Hi there, I'm Karen! Hello! I'm Karen O'Malley, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois. I see being a therapist as a privilege—to get to know you and the unique circumstances that bring you toward seeking therapy. Most commonly, my area of focus is mental wellness, life adjustment issues, and trauma-informed care. My approach The client-centered approach describes my work best. As a client, you know yourself better than anyone, whether you are aware of this or not. I tend to broaden this approach by borrowing from several theoretical models such as CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, and DBT. My focus The clients I work well with are those who are willing and wanting to do the work. They may be going through lifespan adjustments such as transitioning from high school to college, college to first career job, marriage or divorce, or grief and loss. Most have a comorbidity of a mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders causing them distress. I am trauma-informed and can help clients navigate interventions such as EFT Tapping, Narrative Therapy, and DBT to help lessen the burden of traumatic experiences. My communication style I find that most clients describe me as warm and empathetic in my communication style—a good listener and compassionate. When building rapport with you, it is my goal for you to feel comfortable, at ease, and safe during our sessions together. We will work together to create your goals and a plan to help you reach them. My journey to mental healthcare Initially, when I decided to pursue a career as a therapist, I had already started a family and was a stay-at-home mom to two children for 16 years. It was during that time of growth in my life that I saw a need to help others in whatever capacity I was drawn to. When that was not enough, I sought higher education in my early 40s and pursued a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Argosy University.
