Karen Shehata, MS

Psychotherapist
FL
The provider is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. I provide therapy for adolescents, young adults, and adults who are seeking meaningful change, emotional relief, and greater clarity in their lives. Many of the clients I work with experience anxiety, depression, ADHD-related concerns, grief, trauma, self-esteem challenges, or difficulty navigating major life transitions. Therapy offers a space to slow down, better understand these experiences, and develop tools to move forward with intention. My therapeutic style is compassionate, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I am especially mindful of how stigma, fear, or past experiences of invalidation can make it difficult to seek support, and I prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable exploring complex emotions at their own pace. I use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based practices, and trauma-informed care. Treatment is tailored to each client’s unique needs, values, and cultural background. Together, we focus on building effective coping skills, improving emotional regulation, strengthening self-worth, and fostering resilience to support lasting growth. I offer therapy in both English and Arabic and strive to provide culturally responsive, inclusive care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients can expect a supportive, collaborative, and structured approach to therapy. I strive to create a nonjudgmental space where you feel comfortable sharing your experiences while also working toward meaningful and practical change. Sessions are goal-oriented and focused on helping you better understand patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress, relationship difficulties, or feeling stuck. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based practices. Depending on your goals, sessions may include skill-building, reflection, emotional regulation strategies, and tools you can apply between sessions to support progress outside of therapy. In our initial sessions, we will clarify your goals and what you hope to achieve through therapy. As we continue to work together, we will regularly review our progress and adjust our focus as needed. While therapy can involve exploring insight and past experiences, the emphasis remains on helping you build skills, increase self-awareness, and create changes that feel sustainable and aligned with your values.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with an initial session focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We will discuss your current concerns, relevant medical history, and what you hope to achieve through treatment. This session also allows us to identify goals and determine an approach that feels supportive and aligned with your needs. Ongoing sessions are structured yet flexible. We typically begin by checking in on how things have been since the last session, including any changes, challenges, or successes. Sessions then focus on exploring patterns related to your concerns and developing practical skills to help you manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviors more effectively. This may include cognitive and behavioral strategies, emotional regulation skills, mindfulness practices, or values-based work, depending on your goals. Progress is reviewed regularly, and treatment is adjusted as needed to ensure it remains relevant and effective. While sessions may include insight and reflection, the overall focus is on helping you build tools, coping strategies, and awareness that support long-term growth and greater confidence in navigating life’s challenges.
