Getting to know Karin Roach

I have been working with individuals and groups for over 20 years, utilizing a collaborative, strength-based approach. I do not believe that abstinence needs to be a prerequisite or a necessary goal for treatment, and I work from a non-shaming perspective. I have expertise in substance use, trauma, depression, anxiety, and ADHD. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in NYS (LMHC) and an internationally Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, Master Counselor (CASAC). I hold a Master's in Forensic Psychology from the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I began my career working within the court system in New York City as a liaison and counselor for people experiencing mental health and substance use issues. I went on to run BRC-CDCC, a groundbreaking NYC inpatient not-for-profit program for people in crisis due to substance use and mental health challenges. I trained and mentored a team of counselors and support staff, and we treated thousands of people annually through individual and group therapy. I have been at the forefront of important changes in the treatment of addictive disorders and mental health issues. I encouraged my team to utilize integrative therapies that incorporated an understanding of the complexities patients face. I helped define best practices with the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I instituted trauma-informed and harm reduction approaches at the grassroots level, utilizing models like Seeking Safety, Motivational Interviewing, Urge Surfing, and Mindfulness. My focus on harm reduction therapy was forged through practical experience with people experiencing mental health challenges, substance use issues, trauma, and risky behaviors.

Working with Karin has been the best thing I've done for my mental health. She is empathetic, nonjudgemental and gives great, actionable advice. I feel like I'm talking to a friend during our sessions. Instead of reflecting my own thoughts and feelings back to me, she helps me find solutions I'm comfortable with. I could not recommend her more.
My visits with Karin have been great. She has helped me take control of my anxiety issues and has made me into a much more confident person. I highly recommend her.
