Psychotherapist
5350 S Pr Ave, Apt 3S, Chicago, IL
Karinna’s path to becoming a therapist was shaped by challenges in her upbringing and early experiences in community mental health. In those spaces, she witnessed how often people were blamed or pathologized for responses that were deeply connected to trauma, oppression, and unmet needs. Seeing both the harm therapy can cause—and the healing it can hold—deeply influenced her commitment to practice differently. Today, Karinna shows up with humility, care, and an intentional awareness of context. She strives to create a therapeutic space that is collaborative, identity-affirming, and non-judgmental—one where clients feel safe and truly seen. “As someone who holds both marginalized and privileged identities, I understand firsthand how powerful it is to feel heard, respected, and fully supported, and that understanding guides the way I work with clients.”

Getting to know Karinna Veltze

What should a new client know about working with you?

Karinna’s approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in safety, with a strong belief that clients already carry strengths worth building on. Therapy with Karinna is not about judgment or being “fixed,” but about slowing down, getting curious, and making sense of experiences together. She works at the client’s pace and checks in often, ensuring they remain an active participant in their own healing. Karinna’s goal is to help clients feel more connected to themselves and more supported as they navigate life’s challenges. Culture, identity, and lived experience are central to how Karinna understands distress, resilience, and healing. Rather than viewing mental health concerns as individual failures, she places them within the broader context of systemic oppression, intergenerational trauma, and the environments people move through. “My work is shaped by my lived experiences as a gay woman with a multiracial family impacted by mental health and addiction, as well as personal encounters with systemic prejudice and witnessing the harmful effects of police brutality.” These experiences strengthen her commitment to care that is responsive, affirming, open-minded, and grounded in real-world context. Karinna is clear and honest in her approach—she is NOT here to gaslight clients into believing everything will be okay. Instead, she offers herself as a compassionate guide and steady support, helping clients access their resilience and navigate the realities of surviving and living within our society.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Karinna brings a strong ability to hold complexity, integrating trauma-informed, somatic, and parts-based approaches while remaining grounded, relational, and attuned. She is especially mindful of clients navigating layered identities or past harm within therapeutic spaces, and her priority is helping them feel deeply seen and safe. She also intentionally brings warmth and humor into the work when it feels supportive, reminding clients that healing doesn’t have to be heavy all the time. Karinna makes space for the full person and leads with the belief that she is always a human first, and a therapist second. Karinna prioritizes safety by moving at the client’s pace, being transparent about the therapeutic process, and checking in often about what feels supportive—or what doesn’t. She approaches therapy as a partnership, where the client’s voice, boundaries, strengths, and lived experience guide the work. Karinna will never assume she knows what’s best for someone else. She believes clients are the experts on themselves and aims to tap into that wisdom through cultural humility, responsiveness, and respect for identity. At the core of her work is the belief that therapy is the client’s space and their time—and she honors that every step of the way.
