Kasey Umana, MPS

Psychotherapist
NY
Hello, I'm Kasey, a creative arts therapist based in New York. Although my title involves art, one does not have to be an "artist" to benefit from this work. Art-making can be a powerful tool in the recovery process; however, it is never mandatory with me. What truly matters is your willingness to approach the journey with an open mind, creative thinking, and a readiness to explore the therapeutic possibilities. I hold a Master’s in Creative Art Therapy from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where I gained a wealth of diverse knowledge from both talented artists and insightful clinicians. I have experience working in a variety of settings, including an inpatient unit at a behavioral health hospital, high schools, homeless outreach programs, and outpatient mental health services. Through all of these settings, I collected enough experience hours to become a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to care is rooted in a person-centered philosophy, guided by unconditional positive regard and a commitment to leading with kindness. I strive to connect with my clients as humans, not just client and clinician. I recognize the importance of feeling heard, and my clients can expect this need to be fully honored in our work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session would start with a check in to establish how the client is feeling. The client typically leads the session, as I practice talk therapy and allow the client to speak about what they feel is necessary. If the client is interested, I may offer an art directive that relates to what was spoken about in session to help the client further process their thoughts and feelings.
