My name is Kate O'Brien I am a licensed professional counselor, a professional certified art therapist, and a substance abuse counselor in training I earned my Master’s in Art Therapy and Counseling from Mount Mary College and my Bachelor’s degree from Carroll College I have 8 years of experience working in various levels of care and settings, including residential, inpatient, medical hospitals, and assisted living facilities I have an extensive background in skills coaching such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and exposure and response prevention I make it my priority to create a safe, nonjudgmental space to help you learn skills and be able to problem-solve any concerns My approach I find that clients have the best results with my approach blending cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy My approach is to lead in a strength-based and compassion-focused way Acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-based, solution-focused, and trauma-focused therapies are other areas that I feel confident implementing as needed My focus I have the most experience working with 18+ populations, primarily clients who have depression, anxiety, mood disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, trauma, or are struggling with significant life changes My skills coaching has helped many navigate these challenges My communication style I believe in creating a space built on warmth, acceptance, safety, and predictability I encourage residents to focus also on what they are doing well and how to build self-compassion My journey to mental healthcare Psychology has come naturally to me since high school I started as an art therapist and became a more talk-based counselor as I continued in this field I stay in this career because I continuously see people go from severely anxious or depressed to having hope and a plan for the future I love helping people and seeing them get better and succeed.
