Getting to know Kateri Perez

Kateri Perez received her undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Human Development and Family Studies, as well as her Master’s in Counseling Psychology, from the University of Houston. Kateri has received training in EMDR through the EMDRIA-approved provider COMPASSIONWORKS. EMDR helps people become unstuck from their traumas by fostering healthier thinking patterns and coping skills, enabling survivors to move forward with their lives and gain new perspectives that better serve their goals. She has also completed Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training through the STRONG STAR TRAINING INITIATIVE, which aims to train veteran-serving community mental health providers in evidence-based treatments for PTSD and related mental health issues to increase access to high-quality care. Kateri is a certified CPT for PTSD provider and a STRONG STAR network provider. CPT promotes healing by replacing negative thinking patterns with healthier ones. Over time, individuals gain the tools to be their own therapist and regain control of their lives instead of being controlled by PTSD. CPT has helped thousands of veterans and other trauma survivors find the emotional support and healing they need. Kateri received Crisis Intervention training credited by the Office of the Attorney General, which enables her to meet people where they are in their healing process after being victims of crime. After such experiences, it can be difficult to focus or begin deep emotional work. Crisis Intervention helps survivors create the safe space they need. She has experience working with groups (ages 6 and up), individuals, and families from diverse backgrounds and is considered an LGBTQ+ advocate. In her work with clients, Kateri incorporates various components such as feminist therapy, art, journaling, reading, writing, and mindfulness to enrich the therapeutic experience.
