Getting to know Katherine Leighton

My name is Kat, and I am a clinical social worker and therapist. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the College of Charleston and my Master of Social Work degree from the University of South Carolina, where I focused my studies on health and mental health. My clinical experience includes trauma therapy, forensic counseling, supporting kinship caregivers, substance use treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and working with neurodivergent populations such as individuals on the autism spectrum and adults with late-diagnosed ADHD.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have an open-minded, flexible, "come-as-you-are" approach to therapy. My top priority is to create a space where you can be yourself. I use trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming practices, which means that transparency, honesty, flexibility, and unique solutions are all things that you can expect.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process for working with a new client begins with either a (free) consultation call, or simply booking your first appointment. At your first appointment, I'll ask a lot of questions about different areas of your life to get to know you better. We'll figure out your goals and, together, we'll make a plan on how to get there. I will be your guide, but you are always in control of your therapy -- you can say no, choose to not answer questions, etc. and that is perfectly okay. I use an eclectic array of therapies in my practice, and we'll talk about your options during your first couple of sessions. Many of these therapies look like traditional "talk therapy", where we sit down and talk about thoughts, feelings, and goals. However, I use some other interventions too. I use a therapy for trauma called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). This technique involves using quick, back-and-forth movement to process painful experiences from the past, so that they no longer hold the same power over you. I also use practices that focus on noticing how emotion shows up in the body and polyvagal-informed interventions.
