Getting to know Katherine Mason

Hi, I am Katie, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of California, Berkeley, and over a decade of experience working in mental health with children, youth, and adults. My practice areas include depression, anxiety, parenting support, child behaviors, perinatal issues, life transitions, identity exploration, and confidence building. I also have extensive training in trauma healing, family therapy, high-risk situations, and eating disorders. I practice in English and Spanish.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe the best healing is done in relationships. With a warm, authentic approach, I aim to build trust and a positive connection with all my clients, to allow for vulnerability, taking risks and ultimately personal growth. I adhere to the notion that two things can be true: we can extend ourselves more self-love and acceptance AND work towards change at the same time. In family therapy, I love bringing together family members to share stories, to listen deeply and to feel truly heard and validated. I have seen families achieve enormous healing and improved relationships through this process. I believe mental health is a human right and work to advance mental health as part of a social justice and anti-racist movement. Many of my clients are from marginalized groups, such as immigrants, BIPOC, Queer and Trans folks, and individuals with disabilities. I am sensitive to those suffering from oppression due to their identity and work to support liberation in the context of psychotherapy. My services are welcoming and supportive. I work hard to acknowledge my privilege, while finding the common humanity in us all. I received my masters degree and training from University of California, Berkeley. In addition to being a therapist, I am the mother of two children. I enjoy spending free time with family and friends, moving my body out in nature, and traveling.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

-Learn more about potential client and why they are seeking therapy -Share about my training, style and practice modalities -Build trust and decide if we are a good fit to proceed Before the first session: -Decide on a fixed, mutually agreeable appointment time -Confirm fee -Complete necessary paperwork with access to online portal Begin therapy: -Allow 2-4 sessions for information gathering, deeper clarity on areas for growth, and goal setting -Continue to dive in, peeling back layers, learning skills of different modalities, coming up with themes, processing traumas and building new neuropathways. We can take our time and change directions as needed, bringing in other people, practice different skills and let the therapy organically unfold. -Eventually there is an ending phase that we will talk about together when the time feels right.
