Getting to know Katherine Pettaway

Specialties: Anxiety Coping Skills Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Additional Areas of Competency: Depression Family Conflict Relationship Issues Sexual Abuse Stress Trauma and PTSD LGBTQIA+ Welcomed Treatment Approach: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Multicultural Motivational Interviewing Narrative I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina. I earned a Master of Science in Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling from Walden University and am also a National Certified Counselor. I have served domestic violence and sexual assault populations, including clients from the LGBTQIA+ community. My primary theoretical orientation is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on how thoughts regulate behaviors and how people respond to life situations. The techniques I frequently use include thought stopping, reframing, journaling, and mindfulness. I also believe in assigning homework to help clients actively participate and commit to the counseling process. Homework may range from applicable CBT worksheets to self-reflection exercises that require feedback in the next counseling session.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe in meeting clients where they are. I have served the domestic violence and sexual assault populations which included clients from the LGBTQIA+ Community. My theoretical orientation is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on how thoughts regulate behaviors and how people respond to life situations. My counseling approach encourages us to work as a team. I am here to help guide and encourage based on what the client decides is best. I consider it a privilege to be included in your life's journey. I look forward to having the opportunity to build a healthy therapeutic relationship that results in the growth and healing that you are seeking.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process for working with clients begins with building rapport in an effort to create a safe space. I believe in a judgment free zone as the more transparent the client can be, greater progress can be made. I am not your typical "how do you feel" therapist. My sessions are conversational yet direct with a relaxed demeanor. All progress is celebrated no matter how big or small because when making changes, we have to crawl before we walk or run. Offering encouragement and support is always a part of each session.

Katherine is professional, dedicated, caring, and supportive. She uses practical steps to help you reach your personal goals. She is honest, empathetic, and skilled.
Katherine was an exceptional therapist. Her intuitiveness and compassion helped me instantly make a connection with her. Together we set goals, identified potential obstacles, and discussed the importance of self-care as a pivotal attribute to my success as a person, partner, and professional. I highly recommend Katherine to anyone seeking to develop in areas of their life that they are struggling, need help, or would like to grow.
Katherine has been a great therapist for me. I always feel like I am able to open up to her without fear of judgement or disappointment. Even when I don't make the best decisions, she always reminds me of the ways I have grown and that I can always pick myself up and begin again. She is patient, empathetic, and compassionate. I doubt I would have made many of the changes I have in the past year, if it had not been for her guidance and constant support. I highly recommend her.
Each time I visit or speak with Katherine she is always professional. She listens to what I have going on in my head and my life. She is really about providing me with feedback. She also helps me process or think about making good sound decisions. I would recommend Katherine to anyone who may need some things sorted out in life.
My experience with Katherine has been top tier, exceeding all previous therapists. Her level of care, compassion and commitment is unmatched. I’ve seen so much progress utilizing the tools given through her effective communication and after session “homework”. Well done on reshaping the experience, expectations and results. I enjoy each session.
I’ve been seeing Katherine for 2 years and it’s been nothing short of amazing! I refer all of my friends, family and students to her. I started seeing Katherine at a time where I was ready to heal from so many things and she was the voice I needed. I can actually say I’m heal-ING from my past and even navigating situations differently b/c of her guidance. Katherine isn’t just a therapist but someone you can relate and talk to, especially as a black woman! She doesn’t just feed you what you want to hear but what you need to hear, and she really allows you to use your own mind. I’ve been therapy so many different times over the course of my life and this by far has been the best experience!!
Katherine has been amazing! She is so easy to talk to, and you know she is as invested in your care plan as you are. My fiancé and I went to her for couples counseling and she listened to what our goals were and curated a care plan based on our communication styles and lifestyles. She also isn’t afraid to share hard truths and revelations with us when needed. We almost always finish our sessions wanting them to go longer and excited a hit the next ones!
If you are needing to get your life together, Ms. Katherine is definitely your go to person. I came into this with the notion that as long as my kids were okay then I was okay, I just needed someone to reiterate that for me; or so I thought. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was a complete mess and didn't realize just how bad it was. Katherine is very direct with a no-nonsense approach and I love the fact that she does not tip-toe around the facts or the reality of my situation. I needed her bluntness to help me navigate the space I was in. This has allowed a certain level of trust between us and in turn has led to much more effective sessions and provided me the ability to hold myself accountable for the decisions I make and the consequences thereof. It has been a wonderful experience discovering who I am as an individual. Whatever it is that you need to overcome in your life, Katherine can most certainly help you.
Katherine is definitely a cleanser to your soul. She served as my Couples Therapist, as well as personal therapist and I could not recommend a better person if you are looking for healing, wholeness and growth. She has ushered me into a place that I never thought I needed to be, but I'm so glad I'm here. She has challenged me and it has made me a better person, personally and professionally. Everyone needs therapy. It's best to talk to a therapist verses talking to everyone else. Everyone needs Katherine Pettaway, one session with her will literally change your life. If you are looking for healing and wholeness and someone that doesn't judge, but also someone you can relate to, you can't go wrong with Katherine Pettaway.
Katherine does a great job at making you feel comfortable enough to express yourself freely, and without judgement. In my opinion and from my personal experience, she’s very ‘results-driven.’ I’ve been seeing her for over a year and I’m so proud of how far I’ve come. With me dedicated to put in the work, she’s helping me piece together specific solutions to move closer to the life I desire. Highly Recommend!
Katherine Pettaway has always been prompt, courteous, informative and attentive during our sessions. She holds me accountable for our agreements in previous sessions and we never close a session without a next step forward.
I thoroughly enjoy my time with Katherine Pettaway. She has helped to dispel myths of what it means to have a therapist as a woman of color. She is an advocate for my emotional success and I truly appreciate her care.
I highly recommend Ms. Pettaway. She is incredibly knowledgeable and has a deep understanding of my issues I am facing. Her expertise shines through every session, ash she is able to provide valuable insight and guidance. Not only is she on time for our session, but she creates a welcoming and safe space for me to open up and explore my thoughts and emotions. Her genuine empathy and understanding make me feel truly heard and supported. I am grateful to have found such an excellent therapist, and I am certain that she can make a positive impact on anyone's mental health journey.
